Educated Jews know it wasn't always matrilineal.

In the time of Ezra when the Jews return to Israel those who had remained behind had forgotten Jewish law and married non-Jewish women. When Ezra returns, he commands them to put aside their non-Jewish wives and their children. if the children from those women were Jewish, they would have had a responsibility to educate them as Jews, since the children were not Jewish, there was no obligation to educate them to be Jews. The men obey Ezra and put aside their non-Jewish wives and children (Book of Ezra Chapter 10)

Actually, it’s a bit confusing, according to the Torah, the lineage in ancient times is traced through the father. The determination one is a Jew is traced through the mother. Clear as mud, right.
