Three of my friends were history majors, they all have white collar professional jobs, none of them have Starbucks careers.cool. 9 jobs.
The ideal of liberty, freedom, equality, the pursuit of happiness brings meaning to normal people's lives, whether they have achieved it or not. Aleksandr Navalny and Nelson Mandela rotted in prison but were sustained by the meaningful natural law ideals of liberty, equality, and freedom.
That whole thing about enrolling in painting classes and joining book clubs is nonsense that only applies to the affluent leisure class.
Not sure what you point is. Poor people need religion? That whole thing about enrolling in painting classes and joining book clubs is nonsense that only applies to the affluent leisure class.
Every single human being on this planet and on this board is a hypocrite who fails to 100 percent live up to all the values they aspirationally believe in.YEs but many of the men who penned those same words didn't even believe them themselves. Thomas Jefferson owned slaves and now his genetic material is more easily found in Hemmings descendants than Jefferson.
Currently America has the HIGHEST IMPRISONMENT rate of any country on earth. On earth. We preferentially imprison black people over white people. Poverty is off the charts for the richest nation on earth. Income inequality is about the highest in western countries. Our gun homicide rate makes everyone on earth look like they haven't even discovered guns yet.
So do tell me about "ideals" somemore.
America has NOTHING whatsoever to do with those ideals apart from slapping them on every scrap of parchment we could find. And then ignoring them.
So only Christianity is a universal higher value?Every single human being on this planet and on this board is a hypocrite who fails to 100 percent live up to all the values they aspirationally believe in.
That doesn't change the fact their are higher values we consider universally meaningful whether we are a Palm Beach billionaire or a subsistence farmer in Uganda.

Except for criminals, racists, and psychopaths, by human nature, we find ultimate meaning in higher aspirational values; the inherent dignity of humans, the aspirational belief human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights - that we are endowed with the natural rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Not sure what you point is. Poor people need religion?
I think most people find their daily activity the site of meaning. Religious people like you may prioritize religion.Except for criminals, racists, and psychopaths, by human nature, we find ultimate meaning in higher aspirational values; the inherent dignity of humans, the aspirational belief human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights - that we are endowed with the natural rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Those values are universally meaningful.
It's fine if the affluent leisure class finds individual gratification in sponsoring the opera company, or taking their daughter to ballet lessons. But you can't make that kind of gratification universal.
I'm basically using Jeffersonian and Lincolnian values as examples of higher aspirational meaning. Jefferson and Lincoln were not practicing Christians. So only Christianity is a universal higher value?
No idea what you are referring to. You keep pretending you are not Christian.I'm basically using Jeffersonian and Lincolnian values as examples of higher aspirational meaning. Jefferson and Lincoln were not practicing Christians.
Having personal agency and autonomy is the basis of everything else you do with your life.I think most people find their daily activity the site of meaning. Religious people like you may prioritize religion.
The author is not sympathetic to religion.Having personal agency and autonomy is the basis of everything else you do with your life.
Our western affluent leisure class takes for granted agency and autonomy. But it's right there as the keystone to everything else
You've never heard of the Declaration of Independence? No idea what you are referring to.
Yes, Jefferson wrote it. It was about cutting England off from controlling the colonies. You've never heard of the Declaration of Independence?
The preamble is so famous for it's statement of Enlightenment values, it is revered and copied all over the world.Yes, Jefferson wrote it. It was about cutting England off from controlling the colonies.

The fact that humans aspire to those values, even when we don't live up to them is unequivocal proof we find universal meaning in them.I'd say OWNING HUMANS and OWNING YOUR SEX slave are more than just "failure to live up to values" ....
They are values, yes. And admirable. America has nothing to do with those values, however. That makes it hypocrisy and disgusting.
It is WORSE to espouse morality while being a piece of shit than it is to just not spout morality.
And?The preamble is so famous for it's statement of Enlightenment values, it is revered and copied all over the world.
You keep conflating Christianity with ethics. As if no nation or society could have ethics without being Christian. The fact that humans aspire to those values, even when we don't live up to them is unequivocal proof we find universal meaning in them.
