The Meaning of It All: Ultimate Meaning, Everyday Meaning, Cosmic Meaning, Death, and Time

The fact that humans aspire to those values, even when we don't live up to them is unequivocal proof we find universal meaning in them.

Words are easy. About the easiest.

Meaning the ideals are meaningless unless lived. And they ain't here.

I'm saying that the bullshit Schopenhauer and Niechze were promoting was nonsense.

The idea that an individual can just find personal gratification in music, art, and the pursuit of the elite ubermensch is not a system of meaning that can be universalized.

Nietzsche never said that.

But you do not like Nietzsche because he was not a Christian. And he understood the religion, his father was a minister.

5,000 years of human history has been an incremental and uneven arc towards more liberty, agency, autonomy, equality, and freedom.

The fact that you would never, ever, under any circumstances trade your position in time and location right now, for a position earlier in human history is all the proof you need that these values have been meaningful to humans for millennia.

Not the point.
But what does ultimate meaning, or cosmic meaning, do to help people in a civil war? God will help us?!
Karma and reincarnation must exist. Why are some born into luxury and others into hell on earth?

Has it really? I mean America bombed a girl's school killing all the little kids in it. We did that just 6 months ago. There's an ongoing slowly unfolding genocide happening in Gaza, there's people who believe that their conception of God gives them the right to kill thousands with a jet. Vast swaths of people still live in poverty across the globe and the rich are doing JACK SHIT about it.

The current administration is hiding vicious human traffickers from justice. Income inequality in the USA is worse than it was during the Gilded Age.

What are we working toward again?

**Karma** acts as the moral law of cause and effect that determines the conditions of **reincarnation**, creating a continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth known as **samsara**. In Hinduism and Buddhism, the soul’s actions in one life generate karmic impressions that dictate the nature of its next incarnation; virtuous deeds lead to favorable rebirths (such as higher human or divine forms), while negative actions result in less fortunate existences.

The ultimate spiritual goal is to achieve **moksha** (liberation) or **nirvana**, which breaks this cycle by resolving all accumulated karma. This is typically attained through selfless action, spiritual realization, and living in accordance with divine laws, allowing the soul to transcend the need for further physical rebirth.

I have no interest in reincarnation. It has no empirical basis. People can believe it if they want. I think it is bad philosophy.

It also presupposes that there's a "something" about one that continues to exist after death. "Thoughts without brains attached". That doesn't seem likely.

I specifically and intentionally stated that the arc of progress was uneven.

You still would never, ever, under any circumstances trade your position in time and place to go live in the Middle Ages.

Why?

Because you know full well that we are at least closer to the aspirational values of personal agency, autonomy, liberty, equality, inherent human dignity than we were hundreds of years ago.

At least not Christian Europe.
