The cost of ruining US/Russian relations isn't free either. Putin is drawing closer and closer to China
since we are pushing him out of a European perspective.

Then there is the increasing over-militarization of NATO itself, and denying Russia high tech means they aren't drilling with the best technology in the arctic ( because of sanctions).
