You're a good person, Crepitus. We don't always agree, but that's life. You, I and all the sock puppet cowards have experienced life. Some grip it and some bitch about it. Some people love their lives and wish to share that love with others. Some hate their lives and seek to spread that hate to others. Why they do that is a keen interest of mine.
My best guess is that they are very unhappy and, being stupid, uneducated, immature assholes, they've decided to take it out on others. Sad.

Only one percent of Americans served in the last 50 years. So if 25% of your family did so you are definitely in that circle.
My father was army, my stepdad Marines, my other stepdad drafted to army. My brother and sister in law both retired from the Air Force. I put him in there when my mother dumped him at my doorstep after she couldn't handle him any more. I was 21 and he was 17. He is quite grateful I did so to this day. Two of my sons were Navy. One is retired chief. Other son Air Force.
As for me? When I was a junior in HS the local service administered the ASAB to our entire class. Not one recruiter ever talked to me afterward in spite of them lusting after some of my dipshit class mates. Years later I learned that my school counselor did not allow them to see my results as that was her call. Which is why I wasn't recruited. She knew I would go and she wanted more for me is what she told me. She was right I would have gone in a second I was doing jack shit with my life. But they didn't ask and it hurt my feelings. I scored in the 99th percentile on every test. Had she allowed my results to be seen I have no doubt my entire life would have had a different trajectory. Funny how things work.

I had non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The VA surgeon removed some lymph nodes and I received both radiation and chemo. The radiation destroyed my taste buds and salivary glands. I could not tell the difference between salt and sugar...everything tasted bland, at best, and like cardboard mostly. I went from a regular weight of 160 to about 115 pounds. Looked like an extra from Schindler's List.
I defeated it by simply waking up every morning. I am, as you might suppose, VERY grateful to the VA for the service they provided.
In my immediate family, my father, my two bothers and I all served. Just my mom and sister did not. That's 4 out of 6...66% served.
I was in the Air Force, 1950's SAC. (I'm an old dog.) My father and two brothers all went Navy.
Funny, indeed. We all have to live as satisfying a life as possible, AF. This is not a dress rehearsal; we only have one chance to get it right.
