But the white share of the U.S. population has been dropping, from a little under 90% in 1950 to 60% in 2018. It will likely drop below 50% in another 25 years.

Why are the numbers of white people declining, and why are nonwhite numbers increasing? The answer is basic demography: births, deaths and immigration.

White women have an average of 1.7 children over their lifetimes, while Latina women average 2.2. The total fertility rates of blacks, Asians and American Indians are in between. So whites have fewer births than all nonwhite groups.

There are also big differences in age structure. Sixty-two percent of Latinas 15 years of age or older are of childbearing age. Only 42% of white women fall into this group. Latinos also have lower mortality rates than whites. Demographers call this the “epidemiological paradox.”

In her research on working-class whites in rural Louisiana, sociologist Arlie Russell Hochschild observes that many whites feel frustrated and betrayed, like they are now strangers in their own land. In Trump, they saw a white man who brought them together to take their country back. Hochschild points out that at a Trump campaign rally, whites held signs with slogans such as “TRUMP: MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” and “SILENT MAJORITY STANDS WITH TRUMP.”

One way that a "white majority" has been maintained is simply redefining who counts as white. The Irish and Italians were once considered non-white. If they'd gone on being excluded, whites would have been a minority long ago. I suppose one possibility is that others could be included in the "white" population -- light-skinned Hispanics already often count as "white," and it's possible that South and East Asians could be added, too. You can already see white supremacist types trying to make common cause with East Asians over things like affirmative action in college admissions... which is a tactic related to the use of East Asians as a "model minority" with which to attack other minorities.

Regarding the lower Latino mortality rates, I find it fascinating, since it's such an outlier relative to the normal tendency of wealth and longevity to go hand-in-hand. With other ethnic groups, greater poverty means earlier deaths. It's conceivable that it's genetic -- for example, Latinos tend to be racially hybrid to a great degree (with European and Native American stock mixed), and there's robustness in individuals with more genetically diverse backgrounds. But I find it more convincing that it's about diet. Most latinos eat a lot of beans, and beans are associated with "blue zones" of great longevity all round the world (including soybeans in Asia). Eat a lot of beans and your cholesterol drops, sparing you heart trouble, and you also experience lower cancer rates from both the antioxidants and the impact of the extra fiber.

Netanyahu won't call out white supremacists in the US nor will he acknowledge that the same people oppose Jews and Muslims..

After the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre, Netanyahu convened a cabinet meeting in which he spoke of the “new anti-Semitism” in Europe and “radical Islam” — two phenomena that played no role in the fatal shooting in Pittsburgh allegedly by a self-identified white nationalist who hated immigrants — but Netanyahu never once mentioned white nationalism.

The man arrested in the San Diego attack, who specifically said he was inspired by the Christchurch, New Zealand, shooting, is also under investigation for a mosque arson; his anti-Semitic ideology is equally Islamophobic.

But Netanyahu appears not to recognize the fact that Jews and Muslims are victims of the same hatred. It just doesn’t fit his narrative or his strategy.
