It refers to 'YES In My Backyard'. It's basically progressives who are for building new housing and in opposition to the NIMBY movement. (Check out the guy's twitter bio I posted).

In SF all we talk about is mass transit and trying to get people out of cars. And it's been a huge battle for decades in the Bay Area trying to build housing along the BART and Caltrain lines and local communities fighting against it. When that doesn't happen you have people building further and further out and ultimately into these fire hazard areas. So it's all tied together to what's happening right now.

Controlled Burning

The Daniel Boone National Forest uses controlled burning and mechanical treatments to reduce the risk of wildland fire, improve wildlife habitat and riparian zones, control noxious weeds and improve watershed and range conditions in eastern Kentucky.
History

The historic suppression of fire has resulted in a lack of periodic, natural fire in our forest. The absence of these low intensity fires has increased the risk of large fire events and has negatively impacted the health of our forests. As part of an effort to use fire as a resource management tool, the Daniel Boone National Forest is reviewing existing resource management and fire management plans to develop an integrated fire planning strategy.

Controlled fires are used on public lands in order to improve forest health, and reduce large wildfires.

DB Forest is in eastern Kentucky but it’s essentially all the same Appalachian forest. One of my buddies is in forest management in WV and they do controlled burns as a matter of practice.

Healthy trees are resistant to small fires. Maybe you’re a city slicker and you don’t know this lol, but it take *a lot* of heat to get green wood to burn. Green wood—even in CA, has a lot of water content, so it won’t burn until the water is converted to steam.

But when it does starts to burn, watch out.

So basically, leaves and small amounts of brush can burn right through a stand of mature and healthy trees without harming them. After all the fuel is consumed there’s little to no risk of a big fire down the road.

Why they don’t do this in CA is beyond me. Probably something to do with the triple crested speckled horn toad.

Bit out of my element here, as I said I don't live there, but how does local communities who are near transit lines, and from I recall, neither of those lines are extensive, bar people from building near them? And from what I see, and consequently know, regarding those houses in the fire hazard ares, the don't seem exactly the transit type of people, you don't build on the edge of a mountain nor in an area surrounded by forest if you are strap holder

Calif, actually nearly the whole west coast is general, is a whole lot bigger than WV and Kentucky combined, I'd have to say the task would be herculean

And again you are missing the bottom line, a President doesn't blame people experiencing a disaster rather attempts to draw attention and offer empathy towards their struggles and loss

Probably did, but why is it important, the fire didn't start yesterday, for a month Trump ignored it, and now, facing criticism, he is going if your report is true, as I said, you can bet your ass if it was an equivalent hurricane hitting Florida or a rash of tornadoes striking Iowa, Trump would be all over it tossing out paper towels and touring with Melania in her high heels

This is really getting into the weeds but here’s a column from today’s Chronicle about how individuals can hold up big developments. That’s essentially what happens. These developments get proposed, some approved, and then through CEQA laws and other mechanisms people will fight them until developers ultimately don’t build them.

I’m not familiar with NYC development so I don’t know if the same thing can happen there.

Trees that ‘are dried out from decades of climate change’ are *dead*. For whatever reasons, CA sucks at forest management. If someone wants to build a subdivision on a wooded hill in CA—please have someone do a controlled burn in the area first.

It will save considerable grief down the road.
