I don't think Trump believes that stuff. He just uses it to make his base believe they are victims of vicious conspiracies. Trump didn't believe (or care) whether Obama was born in Kenya, but it mobilized the Obama haters to form a base of supporters.
The Cohen book describes how Trump called up the (NYPost or Enquirer) and told the reporter he had people looking into the birther issue. Cohen asked Trump is he wanted Cohen to have people actually look into the issue and Trump said no. So he lied to the public when he said his people were investigating it and were finding some very interesting things.

Humanity did not go through the Enlightenment, perfect a scientific method, and embrace fact-based consensus just for us to be dragged across broken glass by a bunch of under-educated, self-entitled truth deniers and lie embracers. In the 21st century, we know better. Facts are not subject to dissenting opinions. The sky is blue on a clear day no matter how much one hates the color blue. Aside from their wanton, proud inability to operate in the real world, I agree with you that most Trump supporters are uncivil. They decided that their chief purpose in life and greatest source of enjoyment would be bothering their political opponents. They say unspeakable things about them. I'm not perfect. In moments fueled by anger or incredulity I have said things of which I am not proud. I am, however, no Trumpist; and that makes me a better person than they are.
I think you summed this up perfectly. It's the reason I took a hiatus. It took less than two hours before someone made a highly personal attack. It is what it is. I'm going to refuse the bait.
