For the longest I've had an idea regarding the death penalty:
If a person has been fairly found via due process and a trial by his peers to be guilty of say Murder 1 and/or treason and the penalty in the state they're tried in deems the death penalty, then the following should happen; in a murder trial, the surviving family members of the deceased victims are the ones to pull the lever or push the button and watch the execution. If they can't, then the guilty party gets automatically commuted to life without parole. If a person is guilty of treason during war time or anytime where their actions result in the deaths of American soldiers or civilians, then it's death by firing squad. If the treasonous act results in just a breach of security with no fatalities, then it's automatic life without parole.
I consider this fair. My pop, a retired NYC homicide detective, thinks ANY death penalty is "barbaric". Go figure.
