...and getting worse by losing money. I support "school choice", but our public schools need better funding with a goal to maximize the potential of every American student. It's better to have a competent HS graduate becoming a solid taxpayer than an ignorant dumbass costing $30K/year in prison or on welfare.

It's not always about funding. Baltimore ( where i come from) has a ton of money pumped in by the state.
Yet students at like 13 grade schools -not one of them in the 5th grade can do grade level math.
It's a culture of failure, despite mentoring etc. it's very sad to see kids futures flushed
Agreed it's not always funding, but since all public schools only see about 8% Federal funding and the remainder in State and, mostly, county/city funds, the primary problem is funding. Management would be an excellent #2 problem.

and mentrship ( especially for kids in single parent families).

I often sit with the students...you're not familiar with how Special ed works, are you? My teacher's desk was big, as a matter of fact...I still have it...my kids helped build it in shop/industrial arts class one year....I brought it home...along with the bookshelves they made....when I retired
They need to bring shop and home ec classes back...
