Trump has made the ultimate threat to Canada, Trade war won.

As always Trump shows what a buffoon he is and what an absolutely terrible negotiator he is.

Any seasoned negotiator would NOT announce a deal as DONE until it was signed and legal and truly done.

But Trump is a like a child with impulse control so when he gets the slightest good vibe a deal will be completed, he foolishly runs to the media and claims it is done.

This below was just 6 days ago...

What we have learned in Trump term 2 is the things arguably many who were not Trumpers (independents, swing voters) thought were his strengths :

- running economy well (failing and flailing)
- construction and building (failed)
- being General contractor for major projects (failed)
- Negotiations (Art of Deal) (failing and flailing, Iran and Trade)

in fact Trump has near ZERO skill in and is actually absolutely and provably inept.

People always wondered how Trump could bankrupt casinos and we learn now he is arguably inept in every area. He has YET to demonstrate a single area of true strength other than grift.

I’m not happy with how the U.S. is handling Canada.

Trump’s core argument for tariffs is that countries should protect domestic production, preserve strategic capacity, and avoid becoming dangerously dependent on foreign supply chains. After COVID, I think there is real merit to that argument.

But Canada is doing exactly that with dairy, poultry, and other protected agricultural sectors.

Trump negotiated USMCA with Canada in 2018 knowing full well that Canada had supply management and high over-quota tariffs. If Canada is violating the market access it agreed to, then enforce the agreement. That is fair.

What bothers me is turning the broader issue into a nationalist PR war over Canada protecting domestic industries when we are simultaneously arguing that America should do the same thing.

We may win some tariff concessions and still lose something more valuable: a durable relationship with one of our closest allies and trading partners.

That seems like a very high price to pay for demanding that Canada stop doing something we increasingly say America should be doing too.

If they do not do what he says, we are going to change Lake Ontario to Lake America!!!

BAM, he is so smart, and he does it staying above the fray! So dignified, I wish All American Presidents were so dignified.
It’s Trump’s schtick, change the media’s attention, it used to work, now everyone is so used to the act that it has reached its point of diminishing returns

For the record it is the US and NOT Canada who benefits from a big Trade surplus with Canada.

Canadian buy far more from the US companies than the US does from Canadian ones, once you exclude energy (oil and electricity).

It is the very thing Trump has said he wants in a trade relationship with every country.

So then 'why exclude oil and electricity from the consideration??

That answer is easy. If tomorrow Canada says ok fine we will sell you less discount (yes discount) oil and electricity then the US cost of energy would go higher. The US DOES NOT want that reduction and is pushing hard now for an increase (Keystone pipeline) for more energy.

But by simply reducing the energy from Canada (or Canada putting a tariff to increase cost to reduce demand) then INSTANTLY the US would be in a trade surplus everywhere with Canada and would need to buy more to not be abusing Canada by Trumps own logic.

So Trumps claim against Canada is entirely baseless, considering the US is pushing for MORE energy, the singular thing that could switch things for Trumps trade policy.

He could rename his cat is had one.

Huh?

That's about the extent of his naming authority.

Does a POTUS have the authority to rename things (Mt. McKinley, etc.)?

Yes, for federal geographic nomenclature within U.S. jurisdiction, primarily by directing the Secretary of the Interior and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), under statutes such as 43 U.S.C. §§ 364–364f.

The President does not possess unlimited unilateral power to rename anything by personal fiat. Geographic naming for federal use is handled through the BGN (established to promote uniformity in federal geographic names), which operates under the Department of the Interior. The Secretary of the Interior has conjoint authority with the Board and can act in certain cases (notably when the Board does not act within a “reasonable” time). Presidents influence this process by appointing or directing the Secretary and, via executive order, instructing implementation.

Mount McKinley / Denali example

  • The peak was officially Mount McKinley in federal usage from 1917 until 2015.
  • In 2015, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell (under Obama) issued a secretarial order renaming it Denali, citing the long-pending Alaska request (since 1975) and the Secretary’s authority under the 1947 law when the BGN had not acted. This affected federal records and the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

I guess you're not including Iran because it's a half ass war, mainly good for using up our weapons stockpiles.
that's the evil thing.

he betrayed us all with the Iran war, but before that, he was brilliant, with the tariffs and the border enforcement.

globalism is satanic.

So you admit Canada will lose any trade war.

Ignoring Canada's tariffs does not make them go away, Kewpie.
