By 1944 American forces in the Pacific theatre had pretty well decimated the Imperial Japanese war machine, but, as you probably know, they refused to surrender. The US Military therefore began to draw up a blueprint for a prospective land invasion of the Japanese islands. Given both members of the Japanese military and civilian that would be armed and prepared to fight fanatically and suicidally, plus thousands of Kamikaze aircraft on Japan that would be mobilized against the invading Americans, plus other types of "Death before Dishonor" tactics like Banzai charges and so on would be ordered against the invading Americans , it was estimated t by expert military planners hat over 500,000 American troops would likely be killed in 'Operation Downfall along with a stratospheric number of casualties. The Americans would ultimately defeat Japan in a massive land invasion like "Operation Downfall", but the cost in American lives could not be justified.
NB: This fanatical, suicidal fighting of the Japanese and "and their pledge of "Death before Dishonour" (i.e. the refusal to surrender to the enemy under any circumstances) _ was due to a combination of (1) their belief that they were the Master - Race, (who, BTW, classified White Western((European) peoples like White American as 'Untermenschen "- or sub-Humam. Westerners like the Americans and the British, for example, who were placed by the Japanese on the very lowest level of the racial hierarchy(!!) ((yes, that's right, the Japanese were even crazier racists than the Nazis. Everyone thinks Hilter was evil because he orchestrated the holocaust the genocidal gassing to death of 6,000,000 Jews. The Japanese, however made Hilter look like Mary Poppins, the slaughtered 300,000,000 Chinese when they invaded China in during the 1930s - now THATS what you call a genocide. And (2) the long and intensive process of indoctrination by the Japanese military of the Japanese people into a perverted 'interpretation' of the BUSHIDO moral/ethical code of the traditional Japanese Samauri warriors. Into a "modernized faux BUSHIDO code which glorified fighting t to death in combat/battle as a sacrifice made in the name of loyalty to the Emperor of Japan and the Imperial Japanese state.
Trueman had seen the kind of damage that the Japanese pledge to never surrender, but fight desperately and suicidally to the death, had done to the American Marines at Iwo Jima. The American won the battle, there but it cost them 7000 l dead. and many thousands more casualties. Ditto Okinawa.
(NB: As an Australian, I have always been proud of the documented bravery of our troops in battle during WW-2; but I have watched LOTS of footage and documentaries of the US Marines fighting the Japanese on Iwo Jima and I have never seen anything like the courage of those men under fire. There are no words that could ever do it justice).

He therefore used two nuclear bombs to force Japan to surrender unconditionally and finally end the brutal War in the Pacific. theatre Dropping nuclear bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had horrific results, but the alternative -:" Operation Downfall" -, a massive American land invasion would have been even more horrific in terms of the number of both Americans and Japanese killed/wounded.
There is a stark parallel here with America's current predicament in Iran. The Iranian Regime - like the Japanese Imperial Military in WW-2 are an insane, fanatical "Death Cult", that absolutely refuse to surrender and must therefore be completely destroyed (as they represent an unacceptable danger with respect to their nuclear arms program. One option here is to literally wipe the IRGC off the face of the Earth by launching a massive US ground invasion of Iran, then installing a new more civilized Regime that the West could do business with. But unfortunately, every top US military analyst to date has ruled this out as they believe it would ultimately involve a bloody war of attrition and a large number of US troops would be killed. The modern-day American public would almost certainly not tolerate the large numbers of dead/wounded American troops that such a land invasion would entail.
