This is the one part of the policy I actually agree with.

America has enormous economic leverage, and we should use far more of it against hostile regimes instead of defaulting to military intervention. If Iran depends on China or anyone else to evade sanctions, then make those countries and companies choose: access to Iran, or access to the American economy and financial system.

Economic power is one of our biggest strategic advantages. We should be using it to reward countries that cooperate with us and make life considerably harder for regimes working against us.

I'd like to see a post from you in the first two weeks of the war confidently predicting military action against Iran was doomed to fail

My thread title clearly makes reference to both the military failure, and the pivot to economic sanctions. So both are part and parcel of this thread.

I don't need to produce some two-week-old post proving I thought this war was a bad idea. I've been a vocal critic of American empire-building and nation-building for years.


My objection goes well beyond whether air power alone could make Iran surrender. It's leaving American troops scattered across the Middle East, vulnerable to retaliation, while we continue pretending we can militarily manage the politics of the region.


So congratulations on predicting that bombing wouldn't make Iran “cry uncle.” That's a considerably narrower criticism than the one I've been making.

I read a story by a woman who goes to Iran 3 or 4 times a year. She says they are not suffering. They have lots of trading partners, including China, Russia and England. Shelves are full, and goods are available. That is what Trump has finally learned. Mr, Bluster threatened all Iran's trading partners. Trump has no idea what little respect the world holds for him and his policies.
