Venezualen warns Americans on Socialism!

Every liberal on this board I am aware of, looks to Norway and Sweden as models to learn from.

I have been to Venezuela several times. In spite of attempts at wealth distribution, it has always been an oligarchy characterized by corruption, extremes in income distribution, and lack of a diversified economy. That is where Venezuela's problems originate.

If you use the standards metrics of what constitutes "socialism", then Norway is more socialist than Venezuela or communist China.

Every Liberal on this board I'm aware of runs from calling something socialism when it fails.

The success of the Scandanavian countries is due to capitalism not socialism.

Norway is ethically homogeneous and has a population 1/60 of the U.S.

Wingnuts are in full retreat and claiming that Norway and Sweden are not socialist.

If Norway and Sweden are not socialist, exactly what countries were Republicans referring to when they spent decades calling western Europe "socialist"??

Leading Conservatives Spent Decades Calling Western Europe "Socialist"

Leading Republicans Refer to Western Europe as "Socialists"
Lately it seems that not a day goes by without a Republican presidential candidate portraying Europe as a socialist nightmare. Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum paint a picture of the Old World as unfree, strangulated by bureaucratic and inefficient welfare systems, and unable to reform and modernize. To these Republicans, Europe seems to be the antipode to everything America is meant to be.

Leading Republicans Call Western Europe "Socialist"
Newt Gingrich has constantly accused the president of being a "European Socialist", often adding in a reference to an all-but-forgotten community activist from Chicago, who died in 1972, but whose Democratic-leaning writings are thought to have influenced the current president "I am for the Declaration of Independence; he is for the writing of Saul Alinsky. I am for the Constitution; he is for European socialism," Mr Gingrich told voters in Florida last week.

Bill O'Reilly noted rightwing blowhard: Western Europe is basically socialist
"I received a letter from Rhonda Hallett who lives in Jacksonville, North Carolina asking me to define Bernie's doctrine of Democratic socialism. Ok. That's basically what some countries in western Europe have, a political system that limits personal income through taxation in return for cradle to grave payouts from the governments. That's the trade."

Vice President Mike Pence is on record referring to western Europe as "socialist".
when Representative Mike Pence, Republican of Indiana, denounced “European-style socialism,” in his speech at the conference on Thursday, the jeers from the crowd did not exactly signal an openness to debate it on the merits.

Norway is More "Socialist" than either Venezuela or communist China.

Norwegian workers are heavily protected, with 70 percent of workers covered by union contracts, and over a third directly employed by the government. The Norwegian state operates a gigantic sovereign wealth fund, and its financial assets total 331 percent of its GDP (as compared to an American figure of 25 percent).

Meanwhile, its state-owned enterprises are worth 87 percent of GDP.

Of all the domestic wealth in Norway, the government owns 59 percent, and fully three-quarters of the non-home wealth (as most Norwegians own their home).

Reliable statistics on the Venezuelan economy are hard to come by, but Norway is unquestionably more socialist than Venezuela according to the above definition.
Indeed, it is considerably more socialist than supposedly-communist China, where only 31 percent of national wealth is owned by the state.

Norway is not some destitute hellscape. Indeed, not only are Norwegian stores well-stocked with toilet paper, it is actually considerably more wealthy than the U.S., with a GDP of over $70,000 per person. Even when you correct for the moderately large oil sector (which accounts for a bit less than a quarter of its exports), it still has a cutting-edge, ultra-productive economy — far from some petro-state living off oil rents like Dubai.

Socially, it routinely ranks as the happiest (2017) or second-happiest (2018) country in the world. The rest of the Nordics are also usually among the top five as well — even more remarkable when you factor in the phenomenon of seasonal affective disorder and the extreme northerly position of the Scandinavian peninsula.

On a snapshot of other quality-of-life measures, Norway boasts:

A life expectancy of 81.7 years.
An infant mortality rate of two per 1,000 live births.
A murder rate of 0.51 per 100,000.
An incarceration rate of 74 per 100,000.

Seems your geographical knowledge is on the same shitty level as the black President that thought we had 57 States, Hawaii is in Asia, and Jacksonville/Charleston/Savannah were on the gulf coast.

I always have to chuckle when an economically challenged leftist points to Norway as their example. Yes, Socialism works when you have a teeny tiny homogeneous population living in a VAST land of great natural resources.

I am fine calling Europe socialist. Tell me what makes them so great? They have small homogeneous populations, confiscatory taxation and very little in the way of opportunity. The reason they still hobble by is that they have vast natural resources they can exploit.

Are Volvo's made in Sweden anymore? Are Saabs?

Also too, why exactly did conservatives spend a decade calling Barack Obama a Marxist-Socialist, but the even more progressive and left-leaning countries of Sweden and Norway are not only not socialist, but supposedly and very belatedly now are admirable examples of capitalism to wingnuts?.

I have been to Venezuela several times.

REALLY? What were you there for; indoctrination? :)

In spite of attempts at wealth distribution, it has always been an oligarchy characterized by corruption, extremes in income distribution, and lack of a diversified economy. That is where Venezuela's problems originate.

I thought they had elections and voted FOR Socialists like Chavez and Madura who argued for exactly the same policies the leftists in this country like Sanders calls for.

Was Venezuela better off economically before, or after Chavez instituted his Marxist ideology?

Obama wanted Universal healthcare and spied on his political opponents. Sounds Fascistic and Marxist to me.

I have done a cursory search on this forum, and there is a long history of conservative posters yucking it up about European Socialism.

Since leading Republican politicians and conservative message board posters here have widely and frequently referred to western Europe as "socialist", exactly what nations were they referring to -- if Norway is belatedly not socialist in the mind of the wingnut?

Pointing to wikipedia to cover your tracks does not cut the mustard.

Republican politicians and conservative posters are responsible for the words that come out of their own mouths.

Conservatives both on this board and in the Republican Party spent years relentlessly calling western Europe "socialist".
If the belated claim is that Norway is not socialist, then exactly what nations in western Europe were socialist according to conservatives?

Pointing to facts that refute your claim and doing so in a manner much more thorough than your cursory search.

You claimed such claims have been made yet you provided absolutely no examples of it.

Norway isn't Western Europe you goddamn idiot.

Venezuela indeed does that. Fuck oil as income in the age of carbon death, we will be great again.

What is the trajectory of oil based economies. Hint, nosedive.

Thanks for the warning!

Venezuela is, and always has been, an Oligarchy.

In spite of periodic attempts by left-leaning governments to experiment in wealth redistribution.

Venezuela's long standing problems are lack of economic diversity, oligarchy, and lack of robust democratic institutions.

Liberals look to Scandinavia as a model to learn from.

Wrong they look to Muttttttthah Russia, at least Bernie, the others to Europe where it doesn't work either.
