Natural acquired immunity involves no control over who and when they get immunity. This means that you cannot have planned herd immunity for a specific time, which is important with quick fading immunity like Covid-19. In effect, it means limited herd immunity.
Also natural acquired immunity kills a lot of people. Worse still, it leads to long Covid in many more people, and that leads to evolution.
Polio has not been eradicated, but it is almost eradicated. Without the vaccine, it would have been impossible to eradicate. Naturally acquired herd immunity was too limited, so failed to eradicate it.
