Sounds like you're trying pretty hard to convince yourself. Without much success.
If posters are really computer programs tasked with creating controversy then you have furthered their cause.
The best case would be to ignore them. Make it as if they don't exist. Avoid calling any attention to them. Deny them the invitation to make a response. By engaging them, it gives them cause to dominate the board with nonsense posts. It would be better to fill the pages with thoughtful discussion with people who can be respectful. If everyone did that the board would be a finer place. If everybody did what you do the board would not be worth visiting.

A lot of surveys have shown that conservatives tend to be happier in life, actually. Granted, the alt right is a fringe group.
As far as the incident you mention goes, I'd be wary of whether it was a hoax or not. Thanks to the grievance culture encouraged by the left, there are a lot of hate crime hoaxes.
