Exactly. And you know else they never bring up? That President Lincoln started paying restitution. 40 acres to freed slaves. 40,000 plus former slaves were given land and living and farming that land with more coming. When Lincoln was assassinated, guess wh kicked them off off and seized their land? President Andrew Jackson. Democrat. Surprise, surprise.
Fun fact: Lincoln wanted to repatriate freed slaves, too.
April 16, 1862 (District of Columbia Emancipation Act): Lincoln signed a bill abolishing slavery in D.C. The text explicitly appropriated money to fund the voluntary emigration of freedmen to Haiti, Liberia, or other countries.
July 16, 1862 (Second Confiscation Act): Lincoln approved additional funding for the arrangement and colonization of freed slaves willing to emigrate.
August 14, 1862 (White House Address): Lincoln hosted the
Address on Colonization to a Deputation of Negroes at the White House. The official transcript records him stating:
"Your race suffer greatly, many of them, by living among us, while ours suffer from your presence... It is better for us both, therefore, to be separated." He requested volunteers to seed a colony in Chiriquí (modern-day Panama).
December 1, 1862 (Second Annual Message to Congress): Lincoln proposed a
Constitutional Amendment explicitly authorizing Congress to appropriate money to colonize free Black persons, with their consent, outside the United States.
December 31, 1862 (The Île à Vache Contract): Lincoln signed an official executive contract with businessman Bernard Kock to deport and settle 5,000 freed slaves on Île à Vache, an island off the coast of Haiti.
Lincoln possessed a genuine, deeply ingrained conviction that multi-racial equality was structurally impossible in the United States, and he pursued separation as a compassionate, permanent solution.
While John Wilkes Booth was not a registered or formal member of the Democrat Party, his personal ideology aligned heavily with the pro-slavery, anti-Lincoln factions of the wartime Democrat Party.
By the way, Old Hickory was dead by then.
