Religion itself is irrational and has no useful purpose in an intellectually and scientifically advanced civilization, but sure, there is worse than that.
Disagreed.
Western philosophy is linear, which is purely Left Brain while completely ignoring the Right Brain. Eastern philosophy is more holistic and uses both brains.
The physicality of the Universe is easier to see than the mentality of people. Although more difficult to see with our current state of tech, the mentality of people is discernable to a limited extent.
While atheists are free to only see the world in terms of physicality and mentality, history proves that there's a spirituality component to human beings this isn't very well understood. No doubt it's tied to mentality just like mentality is often tied to physicality.
In short, I strongly believe that humans have all three components as part of who they are. Ignoring spirituality, just because it can't be seen or touched, is like ignoring Dark Matter. Ignoring it is ignorant.
That said, spirituality and religion are two different things. Religion is a tool, spirituality is a human quality.
