There have been multiple socialist communities in the USA. Some are met with success. Two are still active today.
On a tribal/village level, it can work. As states, or even cities, not so much. Human nature takes over and ruins it all.
The only way it can work on a large scale, IMO, is to have unlimited energy and resources. It's the competition for sources that is the weak point of any society. Unless a method can be enacted to prevent human corruption, it won't work in the long run.
Unlimited energy and resources won't change human nature but it would prevent human nature from harming others.
