How mixed up can he be?

No. The soldiers don't want to be fighting wars. The ones who want wars are the ones who don't have to go fight them, but they do get to profit off them - the military contractors. There could be some foolish ones in the military who actually yearn for action, but they are few. Usually inexperienced. Those who have seen it don't often wish for more.
