The fact is that criminals get their guns from "responsible gun owners"; you guys are the primary source of guns for criminals. So you buy a gun to protect your home from criminals armed with guns they stole from homes.

My stats aren't BS; they come directly from the DOJ's survey that they've been doing since the 1970's:

WASHINGTON – About 1.4 million firearms were stolen during household burglaries and other property crimes over the six-year period from 2005 through 2010, according to a report released today by the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). This number represents an estimated average of 232,400 firearms stolen each year— about 172,000 stolen during burglaries and 60,300 stolen during other property crimes.

And those stolen guns are fueling gun crime.

A cop leaving their gun around, losing it or having it stolen, is precisely why I don't think cops should be allowed to carry guns either.

If you want to use a gun, join the military. They have all the guns you could ever want.
