Interesting Question: Can You Be A Strong Conservative And Support Gay Marriage?

BS- it was liberals who pushed to undo adultery conseuences with divorces. Within a biblical Christian community all sin is condemned. It is also forgiven when repented of. Orthodoxy would not permit a person who has committed adultery to hold a position of leadership within the church polity.

Odd how your bakers don't care if their customers are adulterers or liars or even use the lord's name in vain. It looks like not all sins are created equal, are they?

The scotus declared marriage to be nothing but a Bigoted institution since its creation ... for the purpose of ensuring paternal lineage, ... which allowed for public ceremonial announcements of the hoped for uniting of two bloodlines thru a shared child.

They should have just abolished it.

They did? Why don't you quote that citation for us?

For you, barren couples or elderly ones have no purpose in their marriages, do they?

I had a pre-nup.
Worked fine.

Didn't your pre-nup regulate your marital property settlement? You wouldn't have needed a pre-nup if you weren't married. It was still within marriage and depended on the courts to enforce it (although some courts simply ignore pre-nups). So, government was still involved; more than without a pre-nup.

Women may prefer to be married before they start making babies (although 40% are not), but that has nothing to do with a gay couple being married.

If a gay couple already chooses not to have children, they are not going to have any less children if they marry. So, I still fail to understand how allowing gay marriages produces less children. Those people are not going to marry a person of the opposite sex just to have kids in wedlock.

Many gay couples have artificial insemination, surrogates, or adopt. And, many have children from previous relationships.

I am not making an argument for gay marriage but only challenging your view that it produces less children.

I agree with that premise. I just don't see any reason for the gov't to create and "incentivize" homosexual marriage.

Who will enforce that private contract if one party violates the terms?

That's a little different than this ...

"According to the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO), there are 1,138 statutory provisions in which marital status is a factor ... "

And that's a sad fact because, as you know, single mothers are the most poverty stricken demographic.

It is different. Do you oppose both state and federal laws regarding marriage. And, do you oppose any federal laws giving tax advantages (estate tax, etc.) or laws determining Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefits to married couples?

True. Although in recent years the increase in single mothers has been among somewhat older women who are in a better financial situation than younger women.

The teen birth rate is at an all-time low.

Yes, it discriminates against unmarried couples, "best friends", other informal unions and singles.

When it comes to policies that are designed to discriminate against gays -- whether its policies that allow gays to be discriminated against in housing, employment, etc -- the Republican party seems to be the main party pushing those policies.

So when a Republican in a state as red as Idaho came out in support of gay marriage -- it makes one wonder, is that stance a true conservative stance or is it anti-conservative? Dom Gelsomino is an openly gay, devout Christian who is running for the state legislature and he believes that while Democrats are more guilty of expanding government beyond its constitutional limits, the GOP has committed the same error when it comes to same-sex marriage. Another Idaho republican also supported gay marriage by saying "We as Republicans are and need to remain the party of inclusion, less intrusive government means government has no business in licensing families."

So I guess the question remains -- can you be a strong conservative and support gay marriage?

This should not even be a question about politics. It's about good old fashioned common sense. By definition, marriage is the union of a man and a woman. By definition, gays cannot marry.

I understand.
You are opposed to our fundamental principle of equality under law.

Common sense is the standard you wish to apply?

Alright.

Homosexuality existed millennia before the United States was Founded.
Queers have been fudge-packing and carpet-munching since before JC was a gleam in Jehovah's eye.

And our 9th Amendment protects pre-existing rights.
Please post the wording of the law that forbade same-sex marriage on July 3, 1776.

Thanks.
"The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals and 362 admonishments to heterosexuals. That doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals. It's just that they need more supervision." - Lynn Lavner

Yes, it discriminates against unmarried couples, "best friends", other informal unions and singles.

Some of the rules discriminate against married couples such as eligibility for Medicaid for nursing homes or a widow(er) drawing Social Security benefits from an ex-spouse loses those benefits if they marry before age 60. For that reason, some couples choose not to marry to keep their benefits.

This should not even be a question about politics.

You are wrong. "A question about politics" is exactly what it should be.

It's about good old fashioned common sense.

Accidentally you got this one correct.

By definition, marriage is the union of a man and a woman.

You are wrong. I can easily quote a definition of "marriage" that says nothing about "a man and a woman." In fact, I am sure I can quote more definitions of "marriage" that do not...than you can that do.

By definition, gays cannot marry.

You are wrong.

Of course they can marry...and many do.
