The Massachusetts Bay Colony was vastly more successful than the Virginia Company of London, to include birthing the American Revolution. Of course, the Thanksgiving story is about Jamestown, so, there is that.
'Thanksgiving' referred, I believe, to the thanks offered to God by the Pilgrim Fathers after surviving their first year in Massachusetts.
The interesting thing is the contrasting motivations. The Pilgrim Fathers wanted to practice "purified" religion, shining city on a hill, and so forth. The Virginians went for free land.
You might say these are two dominant strands in Americans, or at least WASPs, ever since.
