Thanksgiving

The Massachusetts Bay Colony was vastly more successful than the Virginia Company of London, to include birthing the American Revolution. Of course, the Thanksgiving story is about Jamestown, so, there is that.

'Thanksgiving' referred, I believe, to the thanks offered to God by the Pilgrim Fathers after surviving their first year in Massachusetts.

The interesting thing is the contrasting motivations. The Pilgrim Fathers wanted to practice "purified" religion, shining city on a hill, and so forth. The Virginians went for free land.

You might say these are two dominant strands in Americans, or at least WASPs, ever since.

The genes in me from the losing side of that genocide don't seem to mind some free punkin' pie. Reparations are reparations. :awesome:

You're full of shit.

William Bradford, the former Governor of Plymouth and one of the chroniclers of the supposed 1621 feast, was on hand for the unspeakable massacre of 1637. He described it thus in his History of the Plymouth Plantation (@1647): Those that escaped the fire were slain with the sword; some hewed to pieces, others run through with their rapiers, so that they were quickly dispatched and very few escaped. It was a fearful sight to see them thus frying in the fire…horrible was the stink and scent thereof, but the victory seemed a sweet sacrifice, and they gave praise thereof to God, who had wrought so wonderfully for them, thus to enclose their enemies in their hands, and give them so speedy a victory. The rest of the white folks thought so, too. This day forth shall be a day of celebration and thanksgiving for subduing the Pequots, read Massachusetts Bay Governor John Winthrop’s proclamation. The authentic proclaimed Thanksgiving Day was born. Few Pequots survived.

Most historians believe about 700 Pequots were slaughtered at Mystic. Many prisoners were executed, and surviving women and children sold into slavery in the West Indies. Pequot prisoners that escaped execution were parceled out to Indian tribes allied with the English.

That "history" is so wrong and convoluted it is nauseating. No wonder you are fucked in the head.

Me genes are Cherokee. Fuck the Pequots. If they didn't fight like pussies, we would have never been in the fix we are in.

Now that is settled, I would like some creme fraiche on that pie, thank you.

I think I'm going Casino-hopping along the Mississippi Coast for Thanksgiving. It should be uncrowded early in the day, ... and then get really crowded starting in the late afternoon. I'm guessing the Buffet will be pretty good.
Thank you for cheering me up. Both of my parents passed away earlier this year and my mother was the heart and soul and driving force behind extended family Holiday dinners. Having said that this first Holiday season without them doesn’t sound nearly as depressing as yours. ;)

Mott, it's always hard when someone passes.
My wife's mother was the Matriarch of our family and when she passed, the holidays that came always seemed empty.

My wife and I have kind of taken over the Patriarch and Matriarch roles and we work at making sure the family spends time together during birthdays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

I'm really big on familia.

Screw talking, I just want some of my uncle's deep fried turkey.
I would too. Unfortunately my Cousins eldest daughters husband is a Trumpster who won’t shut up about politics, especially anti immigration rants. My wife is an Immigrant and is convinced, and understandably so, that the obtuse idiot absolutely hates her. So obviously that’s about the last place she wants to go.

I’m going to have to have a talk with him as my Aunt and Uncle won’t be around much longer.

hahahahahahahahahaha ......

Thanks! :)

I've been at Thanksgivings all my life. It's nice, it was fun. Me and my wife would always host the Thanksgivings for the kids and their wives/girlfriends. Then my wife died a number of years ago, and they would all come over to my house. The women would cook and the guys would sit around play chess, play football, drink, watch TV, and find other thing to do to 'stay out of the Kitchen'. They're all getting married off and starting families of their own. One of the kids invited me over to his house (he bought an old 'fixer-upper' and I helped him fix it up) and I told him I had other Plans, but thanks. The REAL reason I declined, ... his wife's Dad is a fucking Jesus Freak that can't talk about ANYTHING except Jesus. He's fat, so he can't play football, doesn't know how to play chess, and if the TV is on, he just keeps talking about Jesus. Let me ask you something, Mott. Do you want to sit at a Thanksgiving Table and have to listen to some fat guy with his mouth full of turkey and mashed potatoes talk about Jesus ?

Fuck That!
