Those of us calling for people like John Bolton and Mick Mulveney to testify are not terrified of them testifying...even if they give exculpatory testimony.

Republicans are in a bit of a quandary.

If they dismiss even having a trial, or hold a sham mockery of a trial, they will be seen as sycophants.

But if they allow witnesses for both sides, they may actually lose.

In order to win, they have to believe that President Trump is really innocent and prove it to the satisfaction of the American people.

There is no legal onus of proof. There is a political one.

This is not an ordinary trial. This one is very special. It is as political as it is legal. The accused is our leader.

To restore faith in our leader he must be proven innocent.

For in the eyes of the people, as a politician, he is guilty until proven innocent.

And if he withholds evidence it will be seen as just that when the people get their say in November.

It is interesting to note that the Republicans have criticized the Democrats for holding a 'sham trial' in the House (even though the proceeding was actually more akin to an investigation than a trial,) but then that is exactly what the Republicans are proposing to do.

If it was bad when the Democrats did it, does that make it suddenly OK when the Republicans do it?

To believe that is to also believe that two wrongs make a right.

What a quandary.

they just maintained a better veil than they do now

with the internets its very easy for the average person to check the facts

to counter all facts that harm them once the internets began to form


I can remember being a young person trying to figure out what the political truth was


it took going to the library sometimes for hours to go get the real history unfiltered by corporate news


News was ALL republican leaning when I was growing up


and the republican party screamed about it being all liberal


it was not


It was corporate leaning


I had to read papers like the LA times and the New York times as well as other nations papers to get to the proof of what was really going down


that took the library back then because I was poor


The American system of education was designed to NOT TEACH KIDS THE FACTS about politics


Once the internets came along nearly everyone can do it



the right will at some point want to do a China to our internets


so now the republicans hate all news of all shapes and sizes EXCEPT FOX

I hope you're correct, Poli. Unfortunately trump has too many powerful people running interference for him in high levels or government. The United States DoJ has become trump's personal defense team/attack dog against trump's political enemies.

I think the most we can hope for is a plea deal where trump resigns but gets no prison time - that's if he gets reelected. If he loses the election, I have a feeling the Democratic president will pardon him.

True, but so did Al Capone. And he was toppled. The House must go after Trump's taxes while they still have the power, before the 2020 election when that might change.

Trump is never going to resign. Not in his nature. He is self-delusional enough to cling to anything that gave him the faintest spark of hope that he might avoid being removed from office no matter how dire the circumstances. The impeachment holds little hope of removal. He is too powerful. He must be voted out, and the results have to be a resounding and crushing defeat. If he loses by a small margin he will refuse to accept the result, take it to court, refuse to leave the WH, refuse to schedule and inauguration of the incoming President-elect.

A full scale effort must be made to turn out voters against Trump in numbers greater than normal, not only to overwhelm his supporters, but to also overcome the Russian meddling. Every willing ear must be made to understand and share the gravity of the situation. Every possible voter must be motivated to join the effort. We are fighting for our country and the world. We must prevail. To lose would be unthinkable, the end of the world, lost to climate change without the needed leader to combat it properly. It cannot wait. It must be now, this year.

There is no planet B.

The problem for Republicans is if they allow a full and fair trial, all the dirt on Trump's Ukraine scandal comes out and they look dolts if they fail to convict.

But if they only hold a sham trial, it will be seen as such.
