Movement to defund police gains 'unprecedented' support across US

Maybe we don’t need so many. Who the fuck wants to live in a police state? We have 35,000 cops in Columbus. That’s one cop for every 24 persons. That’s far too many.

Where did you get that number from?

From The City of Columbus website....

COLUMBUS DIVISION OF POLICE

Established in 1816, the Columbus Division of Police has over 1,800 officers and 300 civilian employees. The Division covers 20 precincts across the greater Columbus metropolitan area, while serving nearly 800,000 residents.

https://www.columbus.gov/police/

By my calculations, 1,800 police in a city of 800,000 = 1 cop per 444 people.

What's funny is that you think this means they want to get rid of the police.

BTW, if it's a fact, then you should be able to prove it.

Well, the thread title certainly seems to suggest if not getting rid of them, then slashing their budgets to the point that they're undermanned.

Utter nonsense.

The only thing that could go through is limiting the dramatic increase in the budget and restructuring to other vital services and reforms.

I doubt any sane politician would go for shrinking the police force dramatically. This is just being overblown, I think. Anything to trash on the left.

Holy crap. Yeah, that's a LOT. I wonder if the defunding has to do with their military-type gear and armor and vehicles?

If your talking about purely dollars and cents that has a negligible impact on the budget as they are getting that almost for free

Perfect. Sky high unemployment. Major cities not only looted but effectively sacked at this point with no hope of recovery. Now is clearly the perfect time to start firing govt employees. One of the few things that can actually bring money into your neighborhood. Add them to the unemployed.

rofl @ "police state" is that what you call a week of anarchy in the streets?

That’s a serious problem too. The militarization of our police is the primary cause of excessive use of force and exacerbates the racial problem.
horsecrap.. cops dont need an MRAP huh?
with bricks and bottles and Molotov cocktails flying? I'd like to see you out theer in a patrol car

They probably dont need the military stuff its just that they are getting it for very cheap almost free in most cases. If people want the police to get lower end stuff then they actually have to give the police more money as it would cost more to buy it.

Lets be clear though. Police are not getting cutting edge military hardware. They are getting stuff the military want to throw out already (surplus) to make room for new better stuff.

National Defense Authorization Act: include ammunition, cold weather clothing, sand bags, medical supplies, sleeping bags, flashlights and electrical wiring. Small arms and vehicles such as aircraft, watercraft and armored vehicles have also been obtained

The movement to defund the police is gaining significant support across America, including from elected leaders, as protests over the killing of George Floyd sweep the nation.

For years, activists have pushed US cities and states to cut law enforcement budgets amid a dramatic rise in spending on police and prisons while funding for vital social services has shrunk or disappeared altogether.

Government officials have long dismissed the idea as a leftist fantasy, but the recent unrest and massive budget shortfalls from the Covid-19 crisis appear to have inspired more mainstream recognition of the central arguments behind defunding.

“To see legislators who aren’t even necessarily on the left supporting at least a significant decrease in New York police department [NYPD] funding is really very encouraging,” Julia Salazar, a New York state senator and Democratic socialist, told the Guardian on Tuesday. “It feels a little bit surreal.”

Floyd’s death on camera in Minneapolis, advocates say, was a powerful demonstration that police reform efforts of the last half-decade have failed to stop racist policing and killings. Meanwhile, the striking visuals of enormous, militarized and at times violent police forces responding to peaceful protests have led some politicians to question whether police really need this much money and firepower.
.....
Community groups advocating for defunding have put forward differing strategies, some merely opposing police budget increases, others advocating mass reductions, and some fighting for full defunding as a step toward abolishing police forces. Some initiatives are tied to the fight to close prisons. All are pushing for a reinvestment of those dollars in services.

As much as the Obama/Hillary/Soros crowd would love this to happen, I think it's just more scare tactics from the Alinsky playbook.

Williams warns far-left call to 'defund the police' a 'bad idea' that would hurt poor communities
https://www.foxnews.com/media/juan-williams-defund-the-police-bad-idea
"I think this is a bad idea to defund the police," Williams said.
"To me, it's poor communities that need higher levels of attention and engagement from the police to produce good policing, to make people feel safe in their homes and in terms of their stores, property, and the rest."

Williams added that rather than defunding law enforcement, the focus should be on improving police tactics and community engagement.

Members of the Minneapolis City Council pledged to “dismantle” the city’s police department in the wake of worldwide protests over the killing of George Floyd.

Council President Lisa Bender joined several other members in promises to drastically change how public safety is upheld in the city.

“We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with a transformative new model of public safety,” Bender tweeted.

I started a thread yesterday on this subject saying that getting rid of the police is insanity....I got accused of making it up..."Nobody wants to get rid of police".

No...that be you. Why do we need so many fucking cops? We have a higher proportion of cops to the general population of any industrialized nation in the world and the most prisoners and prisons. Who the fuck is serving whom? I’d wager that if we cut our police force in half in Cbus not only would we still have more than enough officers to serve and protect I’d wager crime rates would drop dramatically.

sounds like a great social experiment.....after all, its Columbus.......if it doesn't work we can just nuke it and nothing is lost......

Meh my number are wrong. We have 21 cops per 10,000 people in Cbus which is more than double the National Average.

So we could reduce the presence substantially and still have more than adequate numbers to preserve law and order.

they need the extra cops to protect the sheep......
