Virginia governor to announce removal of noted traitor and enemy combatant's statue

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is expected to announce plans Thursday to remove one of the country’s most iconic monuments to the Confederacy, a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee along Richmond’s prominent Monument Avenue, a senior administration official told The Associated Press.

The move would be an extraordinary victory for civil rights activists, whose calls for the removal of that monument and others in this former capital of the Confederacy have been resisted for years.

“That is a symbol for so many people, black and otherwise, of a time gone by of hate and oppression and being made to feel less than,” said Del. Jay Jones, a black lawmaker from Norfolk. He said he was “overcome” by emotion when he learned the statue was to come down.

I have to ask- does anybody think that any statues of Trump are going to survive ?

Good, Lee said he never wanted a statue made of him or anything from the Confederacy.

A positive move forward.

And everything ever named after him should be renamed.

All the schools, highways, parks, etc.

We won.

Rebels lost.

Their heroes require no recognition.

Put up a statue of Lincoln instead.

This ' book-burning ' has to stop. It's an over-reaction . A far more meaningful iconoclasm would be to eradicate the frontiersmen from history and kick all their descendants out of the country.

See how dumb you're being ?

Red lives matter. But not to Americans.

Palestinian lives matter. But not to Americans.

The hypocrisy is stomach-churning.

I would replace all monuments of Robert Lee with statues of Frederick Douglas.

Good, Lee said he never wanted a statue made of him or anything from the Confederacy.
he was an amazing guy. and a great tactician.
he took over Washington and Lee University after the war , he supported reconciliation between North and South

It sounds like you are okay with taking down all monuments to Confederate generals on all public property.

As long as people in those areas want to and isn't being forced upon them, then yeah. Why would I give a shit about the confederacy?

Hello Cypress,

I would replace all monuments of Robert Lee with statues of Frederick Douglas.

Good suggestion.

Or perhaps

Booker T Washington

Who recalls gaining freedom from slavery when he was 9 years old:

"As the great day drew nearer, there was more singing in the slave quarters than usual. It was bolder, had more ring, and lasted later into the night. Most of the verses of the plantation songs had some reference to freedom... Some man who seemed to be a stranger (a United States officer, I presume) made a little speech and then read a rather long paper—the Emancipation Proclamation, I think. After the reading we were told that we were all free, and could go when and where we pleased. My mother, who was standing by my side, leaned over and kissed her children, while tears of joy ran down her cheeks. She explained to us what it all meant, that this was the day for which she had been so long praying, but fearing that she would never live to see.[19]"

It is remarkable that the south has so many prominent monuments of persons who fought to keep slavery, and so very few monuments of those who fought to abolish it.

I just dont like traitors and losers,

So let's turn you into a loser and see how you feel, you sanctimonious prick.

Do you know that ' Amazing Grace ', the hymn, was written by a slaver ? How , in your book-burning program, are you going to prevent it being sung ?
Don't try and tell me that ' Amazing Grace ' isn't more universally known that a statue of Robert E. fucking Lee.
How does your evident hypocrisy deal with that ?
