Not necessarily. His support staff may be very well paid. Buffet probably does not have a high salary and makes most of his money off capital gains and even municipal bonds lowering his taxes.

My numbers were for averages from the IRS. One example does not change the average.

Thanks gor admitting the wealthy don’t pay taxes at the same rate. That’s where I was going. To the obvious. To that which we are all aware. Mechanisms available to the wealthy to avoid taxes that are not to the average Joe.

The average Joe can buy municipal bonds (or funds), get an IRA, 401(k), 403(b) that many wealthy do not qualify for and they can get the same capital gains rate as the wealthy.

But when the wealthy pay more than twice the tax rate as the average American (and several times the actual dollar amount) they are still paying a much higher percentage of their income in taxes even with any mechanisms used to reduce them.

So, you are right. They don't pay taxes at the same rate--they pay at a much higher rate which is the idea behind the progressive income tax.
