Senate prepares for showdown over filibuster

There are a range of ideas floating around. One that seems to be gathering support is the so-called talking filibuster. It would require senators who want to filibuster a bill to actually speak on the floor for the entire time they want to hold up the legislation. Other ideas include exempting voting rights legislation from the filibuster or lowering the 60-vote threshold to move forward.

“Everything is on the table,” Chuck Schumer, the Senate majority leader, said on Wednesday.

Does it ever occur to democrats that they might want to filibuster at some point in the future lol?

Why would they if getting rid of the Filibuster to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act would destroy the GOP, as McConnell and others are warning?

In order to take advantage of it, the GOP would need to win the Senate, which they said the JLVRA would prevent them from doing.

So it's a hollow threat because the GOP is also on record saying they could never win the majorities again if the JLVRA passes.

The ability to shut down the Senate by this technique is anti-democratic.

I think Biden will just get very mad and frustrated that the GOP is blocking his agenda and unlike Obama, he doesn't have to worry about upsetting certain people. Biden has 60% support.

Another reason the filibuster gives too much power to those obstructing the Senate.

Biden supports the talking filibuster. But Schumer is much more demanding.

I hope so. I am sick of the GOP fucking up our nation.

And what happens if in 2022 in the mid-terms the Democrats are turned out of Congress wholesale and the Republicans take charge--like the last three times a Democrat was in the White House?

Then all-of-a-sudden your abolition of the filibuster becomes a major awshit as the Republicans use it to bash and overturn all the crap the Democrats just passed. I'd expect to hear massive caterwauling and gnashing of teeth from the Democrats about how unfair this situation is even as they were the ones that created it.

What if, what if. Don't care.

Good it will slow down you scum from fucking america up the ass even more.

My advice to the Democrats is Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it...

You do not get to posture as the great defender of Senate tradition.

You rammed a Supreme Court nominee through the Senate two weeks before your candidate was decisively defeated in a presidential election.

It’s why they are so desperate to kill democracy. Democrats should kill the filibuster first.

If McConnell is to be believed, that the JLVRA would kill the GOP, then what do Democrats have to be careful of?

This is only a warning if the GOP can win the majority...but McConnell is saying that would never happen if the Democrats pass the JLVRA.

So this is as hollow a threat as any.
