Senate prepares for showdown over filibuster

You do not get to posture as the great defender of Senate tradition.

You rammed a Supreme Court nominee through the Senate two weeks before your candidate was decisively defeated in a presidential election.

I didn't do anything. I am neither a Republican, nor some ardent supporter of Trump. I do despise the Left, Progressives, and by extension, almost all Democrats since they are now Progressive Leftists.

Ramming through a Supreme Court nomination following Senate rules is a one-time thing. Abolition of the filibuster rule is a permanent (more or less) change that will have long-term implications. The Democrats if they do it won't be considering that. They will only be considering the immediate gain they get from it. That's short-sighted and likely to bite them in the ass bigtime down the road.

If McConnell is to be believed, that the JLVRA would kill the GOP, then what do Democrats have to be careful of?

This is only a warning if the GOP can win the majority...but McConnell is saying that would never happen if the Democrats pass the JLVRA.

So this is as hollow a threat as any.

The People. That's who the Democrats should be afraid of.

And what happens if in 2022 in the mid-terms the Democrats are turned out of Congress wholesale and the Republicans take charge--like the last three times a Democrat was in the White House?

Then all-of-a-sudden your abolition of the filibuster becomes a major awshit as the Republicans use it to bash and overturn all the crap the Democrats just passed. I'd expect to hear massive caterwauling and gnashing of teeth from the Democrats about how unfair this situation is even as they were the ones that created it.

Biden would still be President, so whatever the Congress came up he would veto, bigger issue in 2024

Never approved of getting rid of filibuster, but Mitch, going back to 2008, employed the filibuster wholesale as an obstruction vehicle rather than to force compromise which was its initial intent. Has no real purpose any longer

And at this point, the Democrats might as well get rid of it cause as we saw with Mitch refusing to give Garland a hearing, citing some supposed nebulous “Biden rule,” he will surely dump it as soon as the GOP takes the Senate using the discussion now as his excuse, “the Democrats wanted to do it”

When you lie like this it makes you a troll. You consistently state standard Republican positions.

No I don't and I consistently state my position in rebuttal. But I can see how a Leftist Democrat like yourself gets confused on that. The Left lives in a bubble where anyone, any idea, anything that doesn't match their views is automatically labeled radical Right wing and such.

The distinction between a registered Republican, and a self-styled independent who relentlessly attacks Democrats and defends Republicans, is a distinction without a difference.

What makes you think Republicans would not try again to ram through a Supreme Court nominee weeks before their president is blown out in a national election?

They would do it again in a heart beat.

So would the Democrats. The only thing that kept them from doing the same was the Senate was Republican controlled at the time.

Does it ever occur to democrats that they might want to filibuster at some point in the future lol?

No shit idiot

And if we protect voting rights your evil shits can’t win in fair elections

What kind of a party fights to keep voter participation down ?

An evil anti democracy ass bag party like the Republican Party

The Republican Party now has to admit publicly that they fight to keep Americans from voting if they expect to win

Are you really this ignorant as to how our government works?
Biden will still be President and the GOP will still need 2/3 of each house to vote to overturn any veto.

Abolishing the filibuster is never permanent. Every 2 years the Senate sets the rules. A future Senate could institute the filibuster at any time in the future after it has been eliminated in this Senate. What you are really saying is the GOP is so childish that they would not be capable of bringing back the filibuster after they have spent so much time abusing it.

The People. That's who the Democrats should be afraid of.

The people who voted to give Democrats the majority in both chambers of Congress + the Presidency?

How do you think the GOP is going to win back the Senate when they have to defend twice as many seats next year -some of which are in states Biden won- than the Democrats?

So the GOP isn't going to win the Senate back in 2022, and they lost the Senate in the last Presidential election.

So like I said, you made a hollow threat.

JUST ASK YOURSELF- What would A Republican LED SENATE DO? OR. WHAT DID THE REPUBLICAN LED SENATE'S OF THE PAST DO?

They changed the filibuster rule to benefit themselves! OF COURSE!

The Democrats are going to have to stop being the nice guys if they are ever going to play on a level field with the REPUBLICANS and expect to legislate properly.

CHANGE THE RULE- OR JUST GO HOME AND WEAVE A BASKET OR SOMETHING!

The Senate should be like the House of Lords--basically a bar that's open 24/7.
Their help in legislating is not required.

I'd love to see those GOP animals filibuster voting rights successfully.

I doubt they'd be able to sustain a Filibuster for more than a couple days.

If you have a reason to object to legislation, then state it. If you want to prevent the elected majority party from legislating, you should not have power to destroy the Senate.

I feel like the Senate should be folded into the House, and the full body votes for everything, including SCOTUS picks, cabinet positions, judges.

I get it.

Proportional representation slightly modified by two extra for everybody...just like the Electoral College.
Right now, however, lots of people are bitching about the electoral college.
Still, it's an idea.
