I think there's more prejudices against Poles than Blacks in the USA.
 
affirmative action is equal opportunity. most sane people are fine with it.
But we've now become fascinated with "equity" - not just opportuniies but guaranteed outcomes

Too far back for me to remember although I only applied to in-state (Colorado) colleges. Did my first two years while living at home going to community college and working part-time.

Most Americans I find live in political boxes & bubbles.
They are unfamiliar with the Global sphere of politics.

Short answer.
Autonomy helps the oppressed.

Coming from a Polish / Irish Catholic background who lived without autonomy to the oppressors thumbfor some time.

The best thing to happen was national autonomy.

Before Poles & Irish gained nationhood they were oppressed.

Nationhood changed & improved the conditions.

Dude, you're describing human nature. Yes, there are cultural aspects like Americans prefer independence over sucking the cock of a monarchy or socialist politburo, but as individuals, most people stick to their neighborhoods. It's the smarter, more successful ones who take their college degree and go where the jobs are.
