I think for some it's about community and being together - but when you get to the mega-churches, it's all about gaining money and power - similar to being a Republican sentator - then it becomes all performative. The trouble with humanity and gathering into groups is that we then ostracize everyone who isn't a member. As you correctly pointed out, with the religionists the ostracized tend to be minorities.

Maybe more spirituality and less organized cliques would be better for society.

We visited a synagogue and saw the scrolls, and were going to visit a mosque but their leader was out of town.

I was once told at a fundie church that I needed to be re-baptized because my Lutheran baptism in infancy doesn't count. I was also told that Lutherans and Catholics follow a false religion.
