It has been that way in Massachusetts public unionized schools since at least 2000. Back then they called it social advancement.

"Race studies" is hardly the only made-up field of pseudo-research in universities today. There's this tripe for example (and it's been around for nearly two decades):
Their "study" was to have 626 students in sociology keep journals of all the racist events / talk / etc., they came across during each day over a semester or longer. There was no verification methodology on the incidents listed, no checks on anything. Students were taken at their word.
Of course, the "researchers" found rampant White racism to be the case here.
Think about this. If you were a student, and your grade depended on you doing this journal, would you find racism under every rock you overturned? Of course you would! Turning a nearly empty journal and saying you found little or no racism present in your daily life would just earn you the ire of the "professors" and get you a bad grade. So, you embellish, make up, or otherwise fill your journal with all sorts of imaginary racist events.

I doubt the rapists, thieves, and murderers that the left wants to let out of prison will spare college students or professors, no matter how many times they squeal "but we're on your side".
