What the actual Doha Agreement (Feb 29, 2020) said
- U.S. commitment: Full withdrawal of U.S. and coalition forces within 14 months (target May 1, 2021), with an initial drawdown to 8,600 troops in the first 135 days.
- Taliban commitments(conditions for the full withdrawal):
- Prevent any group or individual (explicitly including al-Qaeda) from using Afghan soil to threaten the U.S. or its allies.
- Stop hosting, recruiting, training, or fundraising for such groups.
- Not provide travel documents to people who pose that threat.
- Start intra-Afghan negotiations with the Afghan government (scheduled to begin March 10, 2020).
- A permanent ceasefire was supposed to be on the agenda of those intra-Afghan talks.
The agreement also pushed for the release of up to 5,000 Taliban prisoners held by the Afghan government (and 1,000 on the other side) as a confidence-building measure. The Afghan government was not a party to the deal; it was U.S.-Taliban only.
Reality check
The Taliban never fully met the conditions. They reduced attacks on U.S. forces but ramped up attacks on Afghan forces and civilians. Intra-Afghan talks never produced a real political settlement or nationwide ceasefire. Al-Qaeda ties were not severed in any meaningful way. The U.S. still proceeded with the drawdown under Trump and then under Biden.
Biden moved the final withdrawal date from May 1 to August 31, 2021, and the execution of the final phase was a chaotic disaster (Abbey Gate, rapid collapse of the Afghan government and army, abandonment of equipment, etc.). That is on the Biden administration’s execution. But the underlying framework and the decision to leave on a fixed timeline originated with the Doha deal.
TBird’s framing—“Trump gave them everything”—erases the conditionality that was written into the agreement and treats a conditions-based withdrawal timeline as an unconditional surrender. It is the usual partisan inversion: ignore what the Taliban failed to do, ignore the Afghan government’s exclusion from the talks, and pin the entire 2021 collapse solely on the guy who signed the paper in 2020 while downplaying the guy who actually oversaw the final exit.
The linked PDF of the agreement is right there in the post. Anyone can read the conditions in Part Two. They were not “everything the Taliban had been fighting for.” They were a set of counter-terrorism guarantees and a requirement to negotiate with the existing Afghan government—guarantees the Taliban largely ignored.

And the Iranians have met the the USAF and Navy and despite their best efforts Iran has only gained in power and leverage in the region with Trump now offering them rich deals they never dreamed as Trump tries to surrender.

ya i am under no illusions that Trump would honor any deal or framework of a deal, the second it did not suit him.
WHat the MOU showed was how little cards Trump thought he had to even get a framework of a deal. That he had to get on his knees and offer Iran pretty near everything they demanded from the beginning of the war, just to get them to sign. Meanwhile Trump and his demand for 'unconditional surrender' and 'regime change' cave and look foolish.
