From the perspective of America this is little more than a human interest story: a college teacher plagiarized, faked his research, got caught, and got his comeuppance.

A People Magazine story from the perspective of America. I've heard of dozens of stories over the years of college teachers plagiarizing and faking research. The system is set up to eventually catch those guys and make them accountable.

If this were simply a story about a random professor who plagiarized and got caught, I'd agree with you. But the NY Times used this headline for a reason "hard questions for Cambridge on race and hiring."

That's why this story has gotten the coverage it has. I understand from a liberal position it's not a conversation you particularly enjoy, hence trying to downplay it.

But not wanting to discuss it doesn't make it any less a relevant topic in academia (and ultimately culture).

Not really. I'm a hard lefty and I find Arday to be repulsive. His story is so manifestly made up that it beggars imagination how he got where he is.

BUT, that being said, the fact that the Right has such a hard-on for the Arday story is more sad than anything. Just another outlier that they will use to maintain their hatred of those who are different or marginalized.

Nothing good can happen because the Right finds one outlier and screams about unfairness. Meanwhile the entire Right is being overrun with Nazis and Fascists and no one blinks an eye.

This is a very interesting topic. It's a hard conversation ONLY if one assumes that an outlier case is somehow a sign that overall DEI initiatives are somehow flawed.

Whoever hired Arday was about as gullible as some of the morons on this forum, but Arday is no more a legitimate indictment of DEI than the Nazis at most Right wing rallies are an indictment of the GOP.
