Lake Ontario is not named after the province

Ontario is a Native American word for "great lake." The province was named after the lake. trump does not seem to understand this.

trump wants to rename the lake after an Italian navigator. LOL!!!

He knows it won't stick, any more than "Gulf of America" or "McKinley" have. He's just being his usual childish petty self so beloved by the simple one-celled organisms we call MAGATs.

At least in 1917 they used the proper method, not just a whim of a President who does not have that power. Unilaterally renaming things was not a power granted to the President by the Constitution.

"1917 — first official federal naming. President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation creating Mount McKinley National Park, which formalized "Mount McKinley" as the name at the federal level. This went through Congress as ordinary legislation — Congress had the authority to establish a national park and, in doing so, fixed the name in federal law and on federal maps.

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN). For most naming disputes short of a full park-creation act, the actual mechanism is administrative rather than legislative: the BGN, established in 1890, is the body responsible for standardizing geographic names across federal government use. This is the body Alaska petitioned repeatedly starting in 1975, and it's also the body whose authority the Interior Secretary can direct or override — which is exactly the mechanism used in both 2015 (Jewell) and 2025 (Burgum) to actually execute the switch back and forth between Denali and McKinley."
