No.
Black farmers (about 46,700 producers or 1.4% of U.S. producers in the 2022 Census of Agriculture, operating roughly 32,650 farms on 5.3 million acres) have far smaller average operations than the national average.
Their numbers and acreage have declined sharply from a 1920 peak of around 925,000 operators (14% of farmers) and 16 million acres.
Farmers interact with USDA mainly through Farm Service Agency (FSA) loans, subsidies, disaster payments, and crop insurance—not procurement-style government contracts.
Disparities in loan outcomes have continued. An NPR analysis of 2022 USDA data found Black applicants approved for direct FSA loans at 36% versus 72% for White applicants, with higher rejection and withdrawal rates.
Farm size, crop mix, credit history, heir-property issues, and application completeness also affect outcomes independently of race.
