OSHA has graded Tyson a D, not USDA. OSHA judges a company based on workplace safety, not on food safety. It is a completely different thing.


They have always had the right to sell food directly to supermarkets, or even consumers. I can go to a farmers market and buy food directly from a farmer.

This allows farmers to process food without any food safety regulation. Processing food can introduce some extreme health risks, and they will not have to do anything about those.

Same thing. Tyson has a poor record of meeting standards, as do the other big 4.

While buying tomatoes last night, I looked for two things, nothing from Mexico and nothing from the US....I ended up buying Canadian tomatoes....Mexico is going through it and US farmers are too gotdamn nasty and thier prices are too fuckin high.

It would. They have an interest in producing a quality product. It's their farm and business after all.
Processing your own chicken is easy. The defeathering machinery is easy to run, and the rest is a bit of cutting in the right place to get the good stuff.

Not a lot more than processing grains or vegetables.

I am not against it all, but we must recognize the additional risk when something sold local, and more easy to then identify and stop and recall when a "questionable product issue" arises, (when a bunch of people in the surrounding community get sick), versus sending product across many States making any issues very hard to trace to a source leading it to get much more wide spread with more serious consequences.

You’re describing what proposed legislation might someday allow, not what Trump actually changed. At this point, this is all largely theoretical—although Thomas Massie has been trying for years to address these restrictions through the PRIME Act.


There is no new federal law allowing farmers to take custom-slaughtered meat and sell it directly to supermarket chains. The PRIME Act hasn’t passed, the narrower Farm Bill language hasn’t become law, and Trump’s newly announced proposal hasn’t even been written into an actual rule yet. So claiming that it now “allows farms to sell meat directly to supermarket chains” is simply getting ahead of reality.


And personally, I find the supposed revolutionary nature of this change a little laughable. We’ve been buying beef directly from farmers for decades. The existing workaround is pretty simple: the farmer sells the animal—or shares of it—to the consumers before slaughter, and then a custom butcher processes it for those owners. We buy a cow, divide it among several people, and everybody gets their share of the meat.


What Massie has been trying to change is the restriction on taking meat processed under that custom exemption and reselling it commercially, including through grocery stores. That would be a real change.


But Trump hasn’t actually made that change yet. At this point, it looks a hell of a lot more like a populist asshole throwing out a crowd-pleasing proposal and hoping it helps his sagging political fortunes than some revolutionary new farm-to-market policy.
