In the 1920's or 1930's, you were required to either have a law degree, an accounting degree, or some sort of speciality for a specific job. The degree that was preferred was a law degree. There were exceptions, Elliot Ness was an exception, but everyone had at least a bachelors degree, which at the time was rare.

It still requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree. That has never changed.

The published special-agent standard is still a bachelor’s degree plus experience (or an advanced degree with less experience). There is a stated opening for long-serving cops without degrees, shorter training for already-credentialed federal 1811s, and some process/background tweaks. That is not the same as “a degree is no longer a requirement.”
