I'm not saying Trump is right (he's dead wrong w/ his operation in Iran) but 'generals' have historically been wrong a lot - going back to Westmoreland.
Having worked as a contractor w/ both the Air Force and Army, from what I've seen, many generals have very little oversight. They're similar to kings in their domain. Some are war mongers, some are super woke and many of them acheived their rank by being the best ass-kisser.
Like in any profession there are good ones and really, really bad ones.
