In normal diplomatic practice, Xi wouldn't go to the airport. But since Trump has already done it once, and by usual Chinese custom — if you give me extra courtesy, I'll give extra courtesy back — the odds of going to the airport to welcome him are now much higher. Either way, you'll see the answer in November.

A lot of the narrative you've absorbed comes from the Russian line — "there's an evil American empire, and here's how we're going to defeat it." This Russian-style narrative is essentially a product of Russia not having enough strength to deal with America as an equal and on friendly terms. And if China and America had a really intense conflict, that would be very good news for Russia. Because at that point the West would try to court Russia, and everything that's happened in Ukraine would suddenly become unimportant. This is also why Europe keeps trying to prolong the war in Ukraine — because improved U.S.-Russia relations mean Europe gets pushed further to the margins. Europe would become a tourist attraction, and that's it. These things aren't complicated. I hope every American can understand this.
 
Watching the Chinese and the Russians reminds me of the advice that when one is on a two lane road and someone is coming at you in your lane stay on your side, get over as far as you can, and hope they come to their senses.
