California lands six universities in the global top 25

I knew a Mormon guy with like five kids and a wife working on his PhD. I'm not even sure if he finished.
You can do it, but you have to live student poor. Student family housing might have two bedrooms, so you are going to have to really stuff those kids in. I would say your spouse could earn a good living, but she would have to take care of the kids.

Even ignoring the money, it is tough to not be with the kids. I realize that we often do the big things with our kids, and think that is enough. You really have to do the little things too.

Almost all the people I can remember who got their PhD in their 20s were either single and full time students, or if they were married they didn't have kids.
It seems like it would work when I am retired. I don't know if the PhD program that is eager to take me back would be as eager in 10 years, when I am 65, but maybe.

Stanford, UC Berkeley, CalTech, UCLA, UC San Francisco, and UC San Diego are little more than leftist indoctrination centers. They crank out mindless, undereducated regurgizombies.
Some of the greatest research schools are "left indoctrination centers...crank[ing] out mindless, undereducated regurgizombies"? Do you realize how crazy that sounds?

Do you realize the geniuses who went to Stanford alone?

IBDman is crazy. And very stupid

Translation: "Why can't everyone else hate Cypress as much as I do?:cuss:"

Why so upset Perry? You interject and butt in all the time when I am exchanging posts with someone else.

And yet more of your need to think you have upset or triggered someone.

Why is this a thing for you?

There is a limited supply of places to be in California, so the market reacts by making them expensive.

For instance, there are only so many people who can live on Billionaires' Row in NYC, and yet there are millions more who want to own a condo there. That drives up the price so high they call it Billionaires' Row.

You are assuming growth is solely about the number of people who want to live there. Growth is also about the limitations on growth.
Thats all well and good but why would more people want to move to places where its more expensive to live?

Im not assuming anything

California taxpayers got robbed. I wonder whose pockets got filled.
They got federal funds for that, brah, from all the other states, and Obammer.
Obama offered it to Rick Scott, too, but Scott turned it down.
He should be the leader of The Senate right now, but they made The Swamp pick. (Thune)
And no rail is going to be completed in CA.
Pretty sure it started with 8 billion. Going on memory alone.
In reality it was just another Cloward-Piven thing from Obama, like the ACA.

 Every attempt on this thread to prove I'm a "liar" ended in utter failure.
The take-away here is that if one can't discuss the thread topic, massively divert it by making shit up and indulging in petty grievances!
Not really, goober, but you keep digging. Don't make a fuck to me. :dunno:

My father wrote his history for the family before he passed. In it he included this blurb about academia:

In the Ph.D. program I was a Real Estate major and Finance minor. My initial plan was
to follow in (name) path and stay in Columbus and work for (company).
However, one thing I found out early in the program was that all my fellow Ph.D.
students thought research and publishing were their primary career goals and measure
of success. And further, only if you couldn’t accomplish these objectives, did you go into
business, otherwise known as the “dark side”. To avoid this terrible fate, I developed a
plan. It was to go into academia after graduation, teach, research and publish until I
earned tenure. Then no one could say he couldn’t make it in academics.
Wow, that's the exact opposite of what I did.
What a prof said said led me to my decision.
"Those who can, do; Those who can't, teach."
Oh, he was an elbow patches, bowtie kind of guy, just like like somebody else I knew
that made a life in Academia. There are other choices, though.

Because they can make more money, live a better life, and have a higher standard of living?
So you're saying its so expensive to live in CA because so many people want to be there but there are two states where its more expensive to live and people want to move there instead of CA because , "...they can make more money, live a better life, and have a higher standard of living?"

Some of the greatest research schools are "left indoctrination centers...crank[ing] out mindless, undereducated regurgizombies"? Do you realize how crazy that sounds?

Do you realize the geniuses who went to Stanford alone?
Are you aware of how many thousands of SLA-type brainwashed "undereducated regurgizombies" like Patty Hearsts are running around the country right now?
That's a problem.
Not exactly a miniscule one, either.

So you're saying its so expensive to live in CA because so many people want to be there but there are two states where its more expensive to live and people want to move there instead of CA because , "...they can make more money, live a better life, and have a higher standard of living?"
Lots of people want to live there, and there is limited space, so that bids up the cost of living there.

Actually, there is a huge amount of cheap living in California, but it is in the majority of the state where no one wants to live.

Generally higher cost of living reduces standard of living.

Do you realize how stupid you make yourself seem by referring to Stanford, UC Berkeley, CalTech, UCLA, UC San Francisco, and UC San Diego as "Some of the greatest research schools"? There's a reason that those schools are not known for a single contribution to anything but Marxism and other leftist ideologies.

Do you realize the geniuses who went to Stanford alone?
Do you realize that no one applies the word "genius" to Stanford students? I have met many Standford graduates and aside from having been indoctrinated into a leftist ideology as you have been, there isn't much else to say about them, unless it is a question of economics acumen, in which case they have been disinformed egregiously.

Once he earned tenure, he got out of academia. (When I was younger I remember asking him why he left teaching and he said "I was tired of being a hippy and wanted to make money")

He was one who was able to excel in academia but also the real world. Not the most normal trajectory.

Oh shit! He was kinda like me after all! :rofl2:
I respect his decision. I wanted to live The American Dream.
Didn't get it quite like that, but I've had a nice life.
Don't regret much.

Are you aware of how many thousands of SLA-type brainwashed "undereducated regurgizombies" like Patty Hearsts are running around the country right now?
The SLA never had more than a dozen members, and has not existed for half a century. To put that into reference, Hearst was 19 when kidnapped, and is 72 now.

How do we know there are not other organizations like the SLA? They were never a quiet group. If there were "many thousands" of domestic terrorists attacking us, we would notice.

The reality is that California schools are doing the research that is providing the breakthroughs of today, and tomorrow. You cannot brainwash people into making breakthroughs in research.
