For Catholics, Christa Pike's guilt does not erase her dignity

In his 2020 encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, Francis made the point again, quoting Pope John Paul II with the words "not even a murderer loses his personal dignity," then going on to affirm that the inalienable dignity of every human being extends even to "the worst of criminals."

The church's now categorical opposition to the death penalty represents a significant and quite recent development in Catholic teaching. For many centuries, the church accepted capital punishment, and ecclesiastical institutions participated in systems that condemned heretics and others to their deaths, most notoriously during the inquisitions.

In the Catholic tradition, Colleen Slemmer's dignity does not require Christa Pike to lose her own, just as the women and child murdered by Henri Pranzini were not further harmed because St. Thérèse prayed for their killer.

My personal view on capital punishment is one of charity. Impose it when it is due..and it should be due whenever an individual is considered to be unsafe ever to be released into the general population. It certainly is more humane than life in prison with no possibility of parole...which I consider the cruelest punishment possible. Fact is, long incarcerations will one day be looked at as we today look at the tortures of the medieval period.

And then there is the matter of solitary/super max......

What do you picture justice and punishment to be like in the future?

I used to support the death penalty for some cases. I don't anymore. It is not administered swiftly, consistently, or fairly. Too many Death Row convicts have been found not guilty of the crimes that put them there. Sentencing to death falls more heavily on the poor, the non-white, those with low IQs and other mental issues. But if we don't keep them locked up away from the public and other prisoners, then what do we do with them?

"Personal dignity" and I agree she loses no personal dignity.

It proves society is better than the murderer

Life without the possibility of ever walking free again

You have proven yourself too dangerous to others to be free

You did that to yourself

As written in and explained in Talmud, very few and far between . So much for you claiming originally to be Jewish "simon"
He's one big act. One of the first responses to me after he changed his name was him basically saying the old persona was dead and didn't work out. All that while, trying to maintain Simon wasn't him. He's been a forced audition from day one. Now, he's throwing in MAGA BS. The question is, is that the real him or just another act? Wasn't Simon supposedly Jewish, but claiming he was Catholic?

Ancient rabbis (Tannaim) established extraordinarily strict procedural and evidentiary rules that made execution practically impossible. A court required two valid eyewitnesses who had explicitly warned the perpetrator immediately before the act, alongside a panel of 23 judges who heavily favored acquittal.

Prominent sages in the Mishnah Makkot stated that a court executing someone once in 7 years (or even 70 years) was destructive or tyrannical. The high court (Sanhedrin) effectively abolished carrying out capital punishment decades before the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE. Prominent legal codifiers like Maimonides argued it is infinitely better to acquit a thousand guilty people than to execute a single innocent person.

I've always thought poorly of the death penalty, no matter the circumstances. Here's a thought for Christians or any religious person, really. If you kill them, that makes you guilty of the same acts they committed and puts them in the grace of God. Better for them to be put away and do menial things to pay back the society they wronged. I know a lot of eye-for-an-eye types exist among Old Testament Christians, but they can eat a bag of dicks.

The Legal Meaning
    • No Literal Maiming: Rabbinic tradition and the Talmud (such as in Bava Kamma 84a) establish that Jewish courts never practiced literal physical mutilation.
    • Fair Trade for Loss: The Hebrew word tahat translates to "in exchange for" or "under," signifying a substitution rather than literal harm.
    • Practical Impossibility: The rabbis noted that physical retaliation is unjust and imprecise—for instance, blinding a one-eyed person would leave them totally blind, and no two physical injuries or body parts are identical.

I am anti death penalty, not because I sympathize with the criminals and not because of any religious stance but because we have been wrong over 200 times and sentenced innocent people to death. More than 20 of them were executed, and more died on death row waiting for appeals and such.

Some people have no real internal identity

They just surface level try on personality costumes until they find what they want

These people are sadly incapable of finding an authentic identity

So they via play a personality all their lives in the most futile way

Never finding what they want

Guano is a Muslim - always has been. He is an Islamo-Nazi who advocates genocide of the Jews in Israel. A Muslim Supremacist who puts on "Jew Face" to act out every bigoted trope about Jews to smear, slander, and defame real Jews. A walking rendition of the Protocols of Zion.
