She voted for Trump every time. Then came cancer and the bills

Would you rather make a billion dollars and pay $100 million on it, or make zero, and pay nothing on it?
Complex question fallacy. You are giving me a Hobson's choice.

Hob·son's choice
[ˌhɒbs(ə)nz ˈtʃɔɪs]
noun
Hobson's choice (noun)
Hobson's choices (plural noun)
  1. a choice of taking what is available or nothing at all:
"the regional council must decide whether a private toll bridge is better than no bridge at all—it's a Hobson's choice"

a choice of taking what is available or nothing at all:
In this case little to nothing is available, so it is not a choice between what is available or nothing. It is a choice with paying higher taxes on a much larger return, or paying lower taxes on a much lower return. People generally pick the higher after taxes return, which is generally America.

The choice is you get $900 million or you get nothing. That is a Hobson's choice. It is all-or-nothing. Tacking on the word "taxation" to it does nothing to change that.

If I were a billionaire, I could choose where I lived quite freely. So, I simply choose somewhere that doesn't soak me for $100 million in taxes. Why should I pay exorbitant, even confiscatory, levels of taxes simply because I happen to be rich? The Republicans realistically see people as selfish and self absorbed to one degree or another. They don't expect people to simply be caring and generous, though they may be.

As a billionaire, I have the economic freedom to choose where I get all those things from basically anywhere on the planet. The Democrats believe, to one degree or another, that people will automatically be altruistic and willingly help their fellow man whoever that man may be. They are shocked when people react in their own self-interests and ignore the plight of others.

Which is worse? It's a choice between realistic, factual thinking (Republican) and idealistic, wishful thinking (Democrats). The latter option always has ended in ruin. History is an harsh teacher.
You assume WRONGLY that it is not countries like America that help facilitate people becoming billionaires. That the billionaires would make the same money in any third world country that would not tax them.

In the real world the answer is easy. Tax the billionaires properly when they make their wealth and charge them an exit tax if they try to avoid paying by moving.

You think 10% is exorbitant? The reason you invest in America is we have a very good return on investment, and a legal system that allows you to protect that money. That 10% tax helps protect both.
Terry believes billionaires should be able to free ride, plain and simple.

Despite the fact the entrepreneurs flock to the US as the best place to try and make a billion dollars Terry argues the country and government do not offer one thing of value that the billionaires should contribute to pay for.

You assume wrongly that as a billionaire I can't make money in country A while living as a citizen in country B where I pay next to nothing in taxes. You can't tax my wealth if I am not living where that is possible. Sure, you might tax my company that does business in your country, but that's a different animal.

In the real world, billionaires rarely "own" everything they have in the polity in which they live. The more you try and figure out a way to confiscate their wealth using complex bureaucratic rules, the more they have incentive to find the loopholes and avoid payment. Exit taxes don't work either because they will simply move their wealth out in ways that they legally can first, then they leave and have nothing where you can tax them for it.

No, I believe that billionaires are smarter than Leftist politicians who think they can take billionaire's wealth at the stroke of a pen. That's why radical Leftists usually take billionaire's wealth at the stroke of a sword.

The US can tax any money made in the US.

If you live elsewhere as your primary residence and do most of your business elsewhere and have most of your operations elsewhere then that should not be taxed by the US.

But that is NOT what we are talking about here and that is to become a billionaire overwhelmingly these entrepreneurs want to set up in the US and DO, gladly.

So the overwhelming majority have no opportunity to escape taxes in that way as they are in the US until they become billionaires and can start looking at those options and it's too late to escape a exit tax

There is not and never had been a form of government who does not take taxes from behind the sword so I am not sure why you think that is point worth saying over and over.

Worse yet, he believes billionaires who inherit should get a free ride.

It is not just Terry. In another thread @Matt Dillon is making the argument that discussing tax policy and how taxes are divided and balanced between the lower class, middle class and oligarch class is not something we should discuss on this forum and not something we should care about.

Arguably the number one political decision that will determine if a country can continue to grow and succeed or fall into decline should not matter to us and not be discussed here.

The only reason for that is these magats have convinced themselves none of that matters and only topics about brown people and trans people matter. lets attack Ilhan Omar and others like that all day and trans people as magats truly believe that is what impacts their lives and not things like tax code.

You want some commie wealth redistribution to get you some of that billionaire money, huh?
That you didn't earn. Yeah, fuck off with that. :dunno:
Coveting other people stuff is a sin, dude. Try being happy with what you have and maybe taking baby steps to increase that.
Just some friendly advice.

Making the uber rich pay taxes like the rest of society instead of giving them a pass and ways to pay nothing is not coveting others peoples stuff.

I know you are stupid and so you think that, but them paying a fair share is just that. They utilize more government services than anyone else and they should not get that free of tax.

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — The Ford Expedition rumbled to a stop and Cindy Banda's bedazzled flip-flops landed on the asphalt of the Houston cancer center's vast parking lot. She threaded through the rows of cars, a tally of patients who gather here to sit with chemotherapy needles or lie on radiation machines.

The elevator dinged open. A year ago in this building, surgeons removed Banda's right breast, and she still didn't know whether treatment had expunged the cancer from her body. Doctors had told her it would be tough to beat.

"I'm more of a positive person myself," Banda said, now sitting with a white wristband in a dim waiting room. But the bills are harder to dismiss, and the single mother with six children in her care repeated something like a mantra. "Keep the house. Keep the cars. And just keep the kids stable."

She had been on sick leave from her job selling internet service for one year, and she needed the income to support her three kids and three more she had taken in after her sister's death.

The doctor said her reconstruction surgery could be scheduled early next year. "I was hoping for maybe December," Banda said, "only because I've met my deductibles." Come January, she would have to pay down the $7,500 again. Earlier may be possible, the doctor replied, if the skin around her surgical scar loosens.

Banda's first impulse was to maintain normalcy, stability, for the children.

But that requires roughly $7,000 a month for utilities, mortgage, car payments and groceries, along with the two water leaks. Then, even with insurance through her job, the surgeries, chemo and radiation added up to over $25,000 that she's been paying off, making Banda one of tens of millions of other people in the United States in medical debt.

Banda tries not to dwell on death and debt.

Turning on Trump and voting Democratic for the first time

A lifelong Christian, Banda had voted her anti-abortion stance in past elections. When her sister was kidnapped and murdered by her ex-husband in 2020, Banda retreated from religion. The cancer brought her back to church with an apology to God, but it also made her rethink her politics.

She voted for Trump in 2016, and his first four years seemed steady, so she voted for him again in 2020. Democratic President Joe Biden's tenure, including the tail end of a global pandemic and rising inflation, felt like bedlam, so she voted for Trump to return to the White House in 2024.

But two years later and fighting an expensive disease, she had found no respite from high prices.

So when James Talarico, a Presbyterian seminary student running for U.S. Senate as a Democrat, visited one of Banda's fundraisers — speaking about his diabetes and his work in the Texas Statehouse to lower the price of insulin — it moved her. "Imagine if he can do that for the cancer," she said.

Talarico and his Republican opponent, state Attorney General Ken Paxton, have different approaches to healthcare. Talarico wants all Americans to be able to join Medicare; Paxton proposed a $25,000 tax deduction for out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Talarico also supports a law guaranteeing abortion access nationwide, which Banda has voted against for years. But after she slid into debt to stay alive, after her grocery bills mounted and the high school had to comp the kids' soccer gear she couldn't afford, Banda's anti-abortion concerns have been superseded by costs.

"Because it's what I'm living," she said. "I'm living it."

Banda cast an early ballot for Talarico. "Never voted Democrat before today!!" she wrote in a text with blue heart emoji.

That's an easy vote. Talarico is a very decent well spoken man that lives by New Testament principles. Paxton is just another soulless piece of fecal matter like dispshidiot Trump. With a track record that proves it.

They will whether you want them to or not. Billionaires don't get to be billionaires by being stupid. Politicians and government bureaucrats often are stupid. They are totally outmatched.
^ Terry's way of saying 'Oligarchs are so smart we should just give them tax policy that exempts them paying taxes.'

This is outrageous! Are we really at a point in America where a single mother raising six kids can't comfortably maintain multiple cars, $7,000 a month in household expenses, and afford breast reconstruction without worrying about bills?

Clearly, the problem couldn't possibly involve financial priorities and past decisions . It must be the entire American economic system.

They are desperate to find a distraction from the issues of the day. We talk about taxes, and they talk about people of color.
