The fact is that the Arabs were once the leading math and science experts of the world. They were way ahead of the rest of the world. From the 8th to the 14th century, they were leading in optics and philosophy, too. Europe was in the Dark Ages.
What happened to them was religion. What happened to Europe in the Dark Ages was religion. What is happening in America now is religion.

Why did Obama win one? What did he do up to the time he won his to deserve it?

How about Hitler? Hitler was nominated for one. Did he deserve a shot at getting one?

Yasser Arafat won one. He was an out and out terrorist. Did he deserve it?

Maybe Le Duc Tho, Ho Chi Mien's successor--who turned it down by the way--deserved one for his decades of warfighting.

How about Antiono Moniz? He won a Nobel in medicine for inventing the frontal lobotomy, you know, that procedure you had.

No, the Arabs were doing okay back then. They weren't some paragons of intellect however. Then the Mongols showed up and changed that. Islam turned to the Dark Side to use a popular idiom.

Yes, they advanced that part of mathematics. The invention and use of zero in mathematics can be attributed to a number of cultures as another example.
