From the moment this became news, I chose to wait for the facts. No outrage, no appeal to emotion, no pretending I knew what happened before the evidence was available.
And even now, I’m willing to question both people involved.
Unlike so many people on the left, I’m not going to turn this kid into a martyr. He was drunk. He made some poor decisions, and those decisions helped create a dangerous situation.
But I’m not going to go overboard on the cop either. Based on what we know now, it looks like a bad shooting, and he probably didn’t have the judgment or temperament necessary for that job.
At the same time, far too many people discussing police shootings have absolutely no appreciation for the fear, uncertainty, and very real risk officers operate under.
You can acknowledge all of those things at once. That’s the difference between evaluating the facts and simply picking a side.
