AI isn't good enough yet to actually write final code, but it gives a massive head start to developers. Claude is the best of them and will get you 80% of the way there. But the developer still needs to bring it home.

but I have come to learn that some people cannot program, or cannot program well. If you do not program outstandingly well, you need to know something to program about. Even then, they figure out ways to just find answers without programming.

Most tasks can be completed one or two times faster than developing an application. Repetitive tasks are best automated.

For instance, a good accountant can put together a balance sheet in excel faster than I can write C# code to generate it from a database. But once it is in code, it's a push of a button, where doing it by hand takes the same amount of time each month. In two runs or less, the development pays off.

35 years ago, Microsoft envisioned a world where all office workers would program in Visual Basic to do almost any task. It turns out most office workers could not learn Visual Basic, and most of the tasks they would have to learn could be done without knowing Visual Basic.

Not Visual Basic, which was Gates move to crush Foxpro and C++ for his preferred Basic. What was embedded in Excel and Word was VBScript. A simplified scripting language. He crushed Foxpro - which Microsoft owned by never updating it to 32 bit. But C only grew in popularity and in various forms remains the dominant foundational language to this day.

But VBScript totally missed the mark. What was needed was natural language scripting. We still don't have it. Java and Python both use C language syntax and structure.

AI, even ChatGPT is great for generating a Python script from natural language input.

Do not get me wrong, having a large number of good programmers does help a society, but it is not the job for everyone.
