If he manages to buy enough time in the US courts to make it to end of life, the controversy will never die. Investigations, both public and private, will expose all his schemes. Books will be written, documentaries will be produced. Trump's legacy will be to be hanged in the court of public opinion, and forever be remembered as a scoundrel.

That is what the Republican party has attached itself to.

Most of the Republicans I know personally can't even talk about it without getting totally frazzed and uptight. They can't even discuss the matter without getting angry.

IMO, there's a clear difference between the staid Republican leadership and the wackadoodles who have taken over the Republican Party. The leadership is trying to ride it out but knows they have to change if they want to win over moderates and Independents; all of whom they need in order to win elections.
