his opening statement, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., ranking member of the committee, made a motion to subpoena the interpreter used during President Trump’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. After a brief Robert’s Rules of Order-style back and forth with committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., the hearing was put into recess and Schiff’s motion was voted down.

After the hearing returned to its original topic, both legislators and witnesses dug into the threats China poses to the United States and how the Federal government can combat those threats and
protect U.S. interests.

Strikes me as sheer Kabuki theater...standard political posturing.

The Dems knew the Republicans would never allow the subpoena of an interpreter, but as a political matter they want to seem like they are trying to get Trump and Putin's private conversation on the record.

I have a feeling the senior senators and representatives in Congress all realize that an interpreter has to be allowed to maintain absolute discretion.

Plenty of things worth investigating about Trump. Hauling an interpreter in front of congress is not one of them, in my opinion.

If it makes Trump look even shadier and sneakier in the eyes of the public than he already does then it's worth the effort.

The repubs would certainly do it.

Why is Trump having a private, closed door meeting with the leader of a foreign country that is our arch nemesis to begin with?

Congress has a right to know what was discussed there.

It's time for Congressional leaders to start having private, closed door meetings about what they can do about Trump.

Absolutely

If that's true, then Russia runs a close second.

But really, the two are different types of nemeses. China is more of an economic adversary while Russia is more of a political adversary.

Can't really compare them on a one to one basis.
ask the littoral states of east Asia if China is an adversary.
China has declared they will supplant us as a military superpower ( this is the century America fades)

of course you can. China is an actual threat russia isnt.

Arguably, they are both lacking the necessary tools (Russia's economy and China's military) at the moment for such a feat.

military follows economy. if your economy is shit your military will become shit eventually.

I think your vastly underestimating the time line here. The 8 years of the Trump presidency is our last shot. At the end of this we will either permanently be on the road to American resurgence or Chinese Hegemony.

When historians think of the fall of an empire they always look at the final invasion as the date missing the fact that that date has been predetermined already because of the previous actions. Its like a car crash. There is a point where you can no longer evade it even if the crash itself hasnt happened yet.

Maybe it's the invasion of their/your neighbors or the cyber attacks they/you have made throughout the world...

so somebody hacked the DNC (who refused to let anyone investigate at the time) and they bought Facebook ads that everyone ignored........not a single vote was changed.......and you idiots cower in your mother's basement......

Isn't it a handy coincidence how you rwnj's suddenly stopped considering Russia a threat to the US right about the same time it came to light that they helped a Republican asshole get elected President?

My, my, my.

Who'd believe it???

In the view of Moscow and Beijing it is the US that is trying to take the entire world unipolar and turn it into its own monopolistic sphere of influence by imposing on others its values, which it proclaims as universal,” he writes. “What Moscow and Beijing are trying to achieve is not spheres of exclusive influence, where they will be able to do as they please without any interference from the outside world, but an international agreement on a new set of rules, which would suit the interests not only of the US and its allies but of other major international players.”

Lukin also believes the Ukraine crisis has accelerated the Russia-China rapprochement, pushing Moscow to seek economic opportunities in China in the wake of western sanctions. China’s efforts to develop a high-tech weapons system to counter the US military’s edge has, in turn, seen them seek more Russian assistance.

So how does Russia's cock taste, Russofag?

In this case, I do not believe the interpreter should be subpoenaed and questioned.

Interpreters that work at this level need to have the complete trust of the presidents and prime ministers they work with. I know an interpreter who did this kind of work, and he made me aware that this profession entails complete discretion and the bullet-proof, ironclad trust of the global leaders who use these services. Any erosion of that trust not only damages the profession, but would probably be detrimental to open and frank dialog between leaders.

Now, Trump is a dumbass, so I don't think he said anything profound or historically significant to Putin. But as a matter of principle and for the sake of posterity, this type of professional trust between interpreters and global leaders cannot be breached absent compelling evidence of criminal activity.

Translators have to be whiter than white.
