Cumberland Island Georgia was the location of what was often considered the highest quality cotton in the world. It was called Sea Island Cotton and was grown by Robert Stafford. At his peak, he owned about 180 slaves and treated them very well.

An archaeological dig conducted there in the 1970’s proved that there were no chains, shackles or other implements of torture to be found. Robert Stafford’s home still stands, as do 12 chimneys. These are the remains of 12 slave shacks. The scientists also found that the ground under the shacks had remnants of canoes, rifles, fishing gear, jewelry, and musical instruments. The slaves were allowed to hunt when not picking cotton. There are no signs of any violence on this plantation.

It was a long time ago for me, but I feel like high school history tended to gloss over a lot of history.

I remember being surprised at my first college history classes because they were truly presented as a full blown academic discipline invoking rigorous critical analysis.

Where is the 'Compensation?

Following what happened to the Land should be easy. The Insurance Companies (most Mortgages mandate Home Insurance), the City, the State, all have a hand in this. This could be some Class Action suit where the Verdict upholds 'Property Rights', ... along with making Lawyers wealthy.

:) Independence Day signifies where 'America' threw off the 'King' system and embraced Democracy, along with throwing off a 'State Religion' system. Most of us like NOT having to SUPPORT a King or a Religion.
